Weed Walk
July 24, 2012
The Berries of Summer
Yum! Yum! It’s time to harvest the berries of summer. There are so many to choose from, I would have to be a bear to eat them all. (Our local bear had three cubs this summer, so we know who will get most of the berries in the mountains.)
Watch out! Berry bushes have thorns and spines that stick and prick. And, now that summer is winding down, there are lots of other stickery, prickery plants about. And stickery, prickery insects, too. The yellow jackets and white-faced hornets and wasps are now ready to defend their nests; we have all been stung at least once in the past week. (Thank you plantain, for evaporating the pain and preventing swelling.)
Let’s take a careful walk this week. We’ll keep our ears alert to the buzzing of flying stingers and our eyes alert to all kinds of thorns and sharp plants. Then we’ll come home and cool off with some nourishing herbal infusion over ice, some sumac-ade, or some berry fizz.
Green blessings until next week, when we will wander among the umbels.
Susun

7 Benefits of Eating Raw Foods
"Raw Foods" is a popular phrase these days that is often misunderstood, yet represents a powerful, grass roots health movement. Some people shun the idea, not knowing what it means. Others embrace the idea, not knowing what it means. And that's no wonder, since there are many different interpretations of what it means to be on a raw food diet. Personally, I advocate a plant-based raw food diet. In other words, I suggest eating green leafy vegetables, sea vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds, and fruit.
