Write A Letter

There are many ways to keep in touch, but there is one way that is more special than all the rest. That one special way is to write, yes with a pen, a letter. I know e-mail is quick and text messaging is super quick, but nothing says, "I am thinking of you" like a "real" letter that is sealed, stamped and delivered days after it was written. There is also power in the pen. Writing is a wonderful way to share your thoughts and energy with someone else.

Some of my fondest memories of my childhood are the letters I received from my pen pals. Most of my pen pals were cousins and other relatives. I adored receiving letters from them and, in turn, writing letters back. Recently, I renewed my love of letter writing and have begun a pen pal relationship with one of my husband's nieces. Once or twice a month, I write a letter to her telling her about what is going on in my life. I recount stories of my fur children and give her a weather report. She in turn writes letters back telling me about her children and her decision to go back to school and she provides an update on the rest of the family. When I see a letter from her in the mail, I drop everything to read it. I so enjoy getting real mail.

I don't think I'm alone. I believe real mail is so rare that, when we get some, it's a treat. I found a box of the most adorable cards, so I had to buy it. When I got the cards home, I sat down and wrote short notes to six of my friends. A few days after mailing my notes, I received a call from my friend Frank. He was so taken by my note that he had to call and thank me. He said it was a delightful surprise and it arrived on a day when he needed a hug. He said getting my note was like getting a hug in the mail. I don't know about you but I have never felt hugged by e-mail.

My friend, Alyson, and I exchange e-mails quite frequently, sometimes several times a day. I love our e-mail exchanges. However, when I receive a card in the mail from Alyson I get giddy. Alyson sends the best cards ever. She usually decorates them herself or finds the most interesting unique cards, often with original art. I have saved every card that Alyson has sent me because I treasure the thought that went into sending each of them. I can't say I do the same with every e-mail Alyson sends me.

Real mail is so special and so rare these days that people really do treasure it. Make it a habit to write a real letter once in a while. The letter doesn't have to be very long. I am not talking pages here, just a few paragraphs will do. The idea is to actually write something and take the time and care to mail it. You will feel better for doing it, and the person who receives your note will treasure it.
