The pain was almost too much to handle. I didn’t know how I got here. Was he the same man who wined and dined me, proposed to me, loved me? How could he be hurting me like this? “I have a certain way I want my fiancé to look,” he said. I looked at my outfit. The bright colors I had chosen to wear were out of character for me, but I thought I looked nice. But instead of greeting me with his usual hug and a smile, when I walked out the building he threw a bomb: “What do you have on? Pajamas?”

If sex sells, how does a sister find Mr. Right? It’s a fact. Sex sells. It is, according to most experts on relationships and marriage, the number one priority for a man. Most women know this, if not intuitively, then from the millions of movies, books, magazines and TV shows that SCREAM it at us on a daily basis. “Sex and the City” is popular for a reason, right?

This weekend I had a lot of mixed emotions. I was glad to get some downtime with my family. My husband and I enjoyed spending time together with our 2-year-old daughter. She continues to amaze us with how fast she’s growing! And we enjoyed a nice dinner at a hole-in-the-wall soul food restaurant with my in-laws after church on Sunday. (Why is it those hole-in-the-wall places have THE BEST food?)

One of the most common questions I get asked by my friends, family and readers is, “How do you know . . .” Men and women, single and married ask things like: • How do you know if you’re in love? • How do you know if he’s the one? • How do you know if he’s lying to you? • How do you know if you’re ready for marriage? • How do you know if he’s a good man? • How do you know if you should go on a second date? • How do you know if he’s cheating on you?

Does he like me or is he just being nice? I remember being so frustrated with dating because it seemed that some of the men I liked were sending me mixed signals. One man in particular seemed to have all the qualities I was looking for: good looking, respectful, a Christian with a heart for youth and overseas missions, a hard worker, and did I mention good looking? Some days he’d act like he was into me, while other days it seemed I was invisible to him. I couldn’t put my finger on it. It was all a mystery to me.

I get asked a lot for dating advice and the questions often begin with “How do I know if. . .” “But he told me . . .” “What does it mean when . . .” In my answers, I like to pass along one of the best pieces of advice anyone’s ever given me about dating: “Don’t Ignore the Signs!”

I couldn’t believe he said yes! After our second coffee date, I’d asked him if he’d like to join my family for Thanksgiving. I didn’t want him to be alone since he was so far away from home. He told me he’d made plans a year before to get together with old friends during Thanksgiving in Atlanta and he had already bought his plane ticket. But, he said, “something” told him to come to my family’s house for Thanksgiving! Yesterday marked five years since I’d invited him over for Thanksgiving. After dinner, he asked me out on our first date! We've been married for four years now!

Shock and disbelief flooded my mind as I stared at the now empty parking spot in our apartment complex. Just 30 minutes earlier it was there. Why wasn’t it there now? The thoughts sped through my mind but it seemed like each one paused long enough for me to ponder: “Where is my car? Maybe somebody mistakenly thought it was his and accidentally took it. They’ll be back.” My husband had the same kind of irrational thoughts as he called out to me (with the car keys in his hand) “Where did you go? Where did you go?” Our daughter cried out “I want my car!”
