Do you immediately envision a person on the side of the street, begging for change and holding a bottle wrapped in a brown paper bag? Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Amy Crowell

Alcoholism is a disease that consists of a mental and physical obsession which progresses over time. It is a family disease that is passed down through generations, of course, not everyone will be afflicted with the disease, but you never know who will. Alcoholism affects the entire family even those who are not addicted. The alcoholic’s behavior results in a family dysfunction that is often abusive emotionally and/or physically. As a result, the rest of the family acts out in a variety of ways in response to the alcoholic. The constant dysfunction becomes “normal” in the family and is a vicious merry-go-round of ups and downs that goes round and round and it is difficult to escape. I know alcoholism and drug addiction from first hand experience. I am in long-term recovery and have been alcohol and drug free since April, 1988. My father was a raging alcoholic who was verbally abusive to everyone in our house. Alcoholism runs in my family including my grandfathers, uncles and aunts. I was the first alcoholic in my family to seek help for my addictions. My co-dependent mother also sought help for her sickness. I strongly believe that is hope for everyone. No matter how far you have gone down; no matter how badly your life currently is; no matter what you have done in the past or if you don’t have any money… help always available. Twelve steps programs are available everywhere and at all times of the day and there are no fees or dues. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are twelve step programs that I highly suggest. Since alcohol is a drug, I wholeheartedly believe that anyone who considers themselves drug addicts must also stop drinking alcohol. When a person stops using drugs, but continues drinking they have just switched their drug of choice.
