If you have heartbu or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), when you take an antacid and your pain goes away, does this mean your stomach is functioning properly? There is a routine that we go through when we are not feeling well or are going in for an annual check-up. We get blood drawn, discuss how we have been feeling with a nurse, see the doctor and restate what we told the nurse, and then we either get sent home with medication and/or you are told that you will get a call if anything of conce is seen on your blood work. Days go by and you hear nothing. From this, you are to assume your blood work returned as “normal”. To you however, this doesn’t make sense because you are still not feeling well.

I remember when I was in high school, and low fat was the way to eat. This notion was everywhere, and fat was made out to be the “bad guy”. I remember buying red licorice and pretzels because both labels stated in big capital letters “low fat”, and I thought this meant I could eat as much as I wanted. I thought if I didn’t eat fat, I wouldn’t get fat. It makes sense, right? Wrong. Fat has an important role in our bodies and is absolutely necessary. What we need to be careful about, is the type of fat we eat.

Life is so busy today. It never slows down, and responsibilities keep piling up. Your day can go by and suddenly you look at the clock and you haven’t eaten since breakfast. You may be shaky, irritable, have blurred vision, or be fatigued. When people are in this state, they tend to grab anything they can as fast as they can. This typically is not a nice green salad loaded with fresh veggies and lean meat. The craving tends to be a simple carbohydrate meal or snack that will satisfy the overwhelming urge and craving because your body needs sugar.

Did you know that 75% of your immune system is in your gut? This means that an unhealthy gut leads to dysfunction somewhere elsewhere in your body. You may have already experienced digestive symptoms and discomfort resulting from this dysfunction. When this happens you may run to the pharmacy, your medical doctor, or a nutrition store and describe your symptoms. At all of these places, someone will recommend a product or medication and send you home. After this you may or may not feel better, and if you do, it is usually only for a short period of time.

There is a lot of media coverage right now about gluten and gluten free diets. Is it just another fad diet? Do I need to be eating gluten free? There is so much information and differing opinions about the matter, that it is hard for even the most educated individual to make sense of it all. What is gluten? Gluten is a sticky protein that is made up of two smaller proteins, glutenin and gliadin. Gluten is found naturally in common grains such as wheat, rye, barley, oats (unless noted gluten free), spelt, and kamut. Now, think about a piece of bread.

Today we live in a society where advertisers know that difficulties with sleep are common. If you think about it, how many energy drink and coffee commercials boast about how to stop feeling tired, especially in the morning? Most of them do. Why is this so common? It is because of stress (physical, chemical, and mental), diet, and lack of exercise. One of the main components of our response to stress is a hormone called cortisol. What does cortisol do?
