[This article is the first of two papers on adaptogenic herbs in dogs. The second is on senior dogs. Enjoy!] I love dogs. I especially love working dogs, for the enthusiasm they bring to their work, for their generous spirits, and for the pride they take in doing a good job. So, I love working with working dogs and helping them cope better with the inevitable stresses of their jobs. STRESS AND LIMITS

Can you imagine if going to the grocery store to shop for yourself and your family was just a matter of going to the humanfood aisle and selecting from the range of different flavors of dry or canned food? (Come to think of it, I have stood behind people in the checkout line whose carts were piled high with boxes and bags and cans of processed foods for themselves, with nothing fresh or unprocessed in their carts at all...)

[This article was first published in the December, 2006 issue of Northwest Horse Source] The best Christmas present I’ve ever received was a bridle. My dad gave it to me even before I had a horse to go in it. You see, he believed in me and in my dream to have a horse of my own.

[First published in Horses, Inc., 2007] The best teacher I’ve ever had was the guy who taught swine medicine and production during my 4th year of vet school. Now, I just can’t express to you how little interest I had in swine medicine and production! It was about on par with the poultry and meat science courses. Even so, I never missed one of his lectures, and with very little study I aced the course. I’ve long since forgotten his name, but I’ve often thought about him over the years and what it was that made his lectures so compelling. What is it that makes a great teacher?

[First published as a blog post at www.natures-apprentice.blogspot.com on May 24th, 2011] For those with horses or with friends or family who have horses, I wanted to share some thoughts on this latest outbreak of neurologic disease in horses caused by equine herpes virus type 1 (EHV-1). For those who want more of a primer on neuro herpes and how to deal with it, there is an article on my web site I wrote during the last outbreak in 2007 (www.animavet.com/articles).

[Following is a blog entry I wrote about a year ago, in a personal blog I titled "Notes to Self." I submit it here for digestion and discussion...] Note to Self: Thoughts of suicide occur only to the sane. In fact, I submit that it may be the one true mark of sanity. Anyone who is even half paying attention and endeavouring to see clearly, to truly understand this world, must at some point reach the state of absolute desperation with the crazy world of humans, and want out.

[Following is a blog entry I made in my personal blog, Notes to Self, about a year ago. What do I think of it one year on? Hmm...] Note to Self: I cannot change the world. I can only change myself. I cannot change the world. I can only participate in its processes. In its constant change; its never-ending re-creation. I cannot change the world. I can only change my part in it. I can only participate more fully. In its never-ending re-creation.

[More Notes to Self, written in my personal blog a year ago. Funny that they're still so current...] NOTE TO SELF: STOP TRYING SO HARD! Stop trying so hard to be yourself. It shouldn't be difficult or take any effort to be who you are. Who are you trying to please? How absurd that we all seem to be trying so hard to be the person someone else wants us to be - or to be more precise, to be the person we THINK the other person wants us to be. That's a never-ending and can't-win game that robs us all of our individual splendor.
