There are many aspects one can learn in public speaking. In the past, I have discussed the importance of word choice, the use of flip charts instead of PowerPoint, how to overcome fear and exhibit confidence in public speaking. In this article, I would like to share with you something I have learnt recently about the pitch and voice control.

How many of you are currently doing public speaking? If so, how many of you will start presenting your topic at the very beginning because you are afraid of time overrun? Here is my opinion. Even though I have only 60 minutes to present a topic, I will still spend at least 7 to 10 minutes to set up a few rules to be used in my presentation. This is done regardless of whether the training is conducted in my training room or someone else’s training room.

Imagine the following scenario: You are the trainer in this 1-day personal development workshop. There are 50 participants in the room. You have just delivered the first session. While scanning the room, you notice your participants are unresponsive. Some of them appear to be lost too. What are you going to do?

How many of you play sports? If you do, you would probably agree with me that it takes time to master a sport. This is especially true for some of you who decide to become a professional sportsperson. If you are a soccer fan, I believe you should know David Beckham. For those who do not know him, he was formerly the captain of the English national soccer team and a master of free kick. The truth is that even though he is now a free kick expert, he continues spending countless hours practising his free kick as he believes practice means improvement.

First of all, I understand that the title to this article is not new because many authors have previously expressed their view on this topic. What makes this article original is that what I am sharing below is based on my own experience as a trainer for more than 10 years. In compiling the Do's and Don'ts lists below, I would also like to acknowledge all my mentors for their generous sharing of experience and techniques used in their own training. Here is my Do's list:

There is a famous quote in Neuro-Linguistic Programming - "The Meaning Of Your Communication is The Response You Get". This means that in a conversation, you think you have chosen the right words and have spoken clearly to the other person but somehow he has actually heard something else. How many of you know what I am talking about?

Let me ask you these questions. How many of you would like to become successful trainers? How many of you would like to spread your messages to many people? And how many of you would like to get paid to spread your messages to many people?

How many of you have attended any motivational workshops before? If so, how many of you noticed that there was something different in these workshops but you could not really tell what the difference was? And how many of you know that any difference you noticed was a result of the effort made by the trainer to ensure that you could achieve the maximum learning experience?

I always believe that public speaking is a learnable skill. As my mentor suggests, it is not sufficient for someone to learn this skill solely by reading books and/or attending courses. He must continue practising the skill. In my case, even though I have been a trainer for more than 10 years, I am still doing my own reflection after each training session in order to identify the possible areas for improvement. In this article, I would like to discuss a situation that is common in almost every training session.
