Kate Irwin Quick Facts

My name is Kate Irwin, my main aim and passion in life is to help others become happier.

Happiness is such a lovely word, I really think it should be used more often! I think we can choose to be happy, now – right now, make that decision. But having high self confidence and self esteem makes a huge difference to your happiness, so this is where my attention is focused.

When I was at school, I was badly bullied, I had literally no confidence or self esteem, was unbelievably shy and found it almost impossible to make friends.

I stumbled through periods of depression, and had a couple of jobs I hated, I was broke, had few friends, no where to live and was drinking too much.

I stayed with someone I vaguely knew and started reading books on personal development.
Well it wasn’t an ove ight solution, far from it, but gradually my self confidence and self esteem started to grow. I got rid of the depression using a variety of methods and was starting to feel OK. That in itself was a revolution.

I changed jobs which meant I could actually use my degree. I was working part time in a Wellness Centre and practising part time as a Medical Herbalist (which I spend 4 years studying!!)

The rest is history really, the clinic wasn’t doing too well, the manager left, I took over and now it is really successful.

I became interested in coaching and development, after all, I was recruiting, training and developing new staff, I was coaching my patients with their health and people were asking my advice. (When this first happened, I nearly fell over, I was still at the stage where I was wondering exactly how I had got here, and if people were about to find out that I shouldn’t be here at all!)

I started writing a newsletter around building confidence and personal development and when people asked if they could have it on e-mail, that is just what I did! (You can receive the newsletter by visiting www.improvedconfidence.com and you will also recieve a fabulous report onovercoming shyness and a workbook containing exercises which will boost your confidence instantly)

I have had lovely feedback from many of the readers, and have been encouraged to start a blog which I did recently.

I still manage the clinic, practice as a Medical Herbalist, coach people in various ways and write.

I also have the three things which eluded me for so long – self confidence, self esteem and happiness!

My passion is to help others achieve those three things much, much quicker than they would alone.

Self esteem building activities come in many different forms. Activities such as sports, dramatic performances and cooking are just a few of the many ways people seek to improve their self confidence. In fact, there are so many options that a simple search query on Google will produce thousands of ideas just like these. The trick, though, is to find something that is personal and designed entirely with you in mind.

How do you feel about yourself? That is the question that needs to be asked and answered before embarking on any journey designed for increasing self-esteem. Never mind what others may think of you; it doesn’t matter. All that matters is how you perceive your own self worth and personal value. Only then can you begin the process of increasing your self esteem to the point where you feel confident and self-assured in every situation. The first step, then, is to evaluate how you currently perceive yourself.

There are some things about ourselves that we can’t change. The size of our feet, for example, or the colour of our skin. But there are many things that can be improved, and the good news is that, given time and dedication, you can considerably increase your level of self-confidence. Why would you want to? Well, people who are confident about themselves are happier, and more successful than those who are not. Self-confidence is an attractive quality, and people are drawn towards it. Well a relationship based on equality, in which you feel free to be yourself at all times and which also makes you feel good, is a start! Rewarding relationships are not about point scoring, you freely do things for the other person and they do the same for you.

Have you heard people talking about positive thinking, telling you to change your attitude and wondered what exactly they meant? Surely thinking positively is not always possible? There are some things that are negative no matter how you look at them?! That is true and positive thinking is not about putting an unrealistic, rosy glow onto things. It is choosing to look at events in life from the positive point of view, rather than the negative.

Affirmations and visualisation are sometimes seen as the tools of those self help junkies who meditate at dawn and don't wear deodorant - not really used everyone in daily lives. Affirmations are positive statements which we repeat and write down in order to give the thinking patterns a more positive slant. So how can repeating a phrase, and one you don't really believe at that, change your outlook? We are drawn to what we think about most (or the things we think about most are attracted to us!).
