Most people have heard of resveratrol, the amazing anti-aging supplement so prevalent in the news. Recent research is moving quickly to show us that resveratrol may now play a role in becoming our next anti-obesity drug. We often compare the metabolic effect from restricting calorie intake to be the relative “gold-standard” by which to judge other compounds as we seek for calorie-restriction mimetics. Ashwagandha is an herb frequently found in supplemental mixtures designed to, in some way, enhance energy levels. Another term used for it is “adaptogenic” meaning it helps the body resist physiological and psychological stress. Ashwagandha is not new to the culinary, healing, or longevity arenas. No one seemed to notice as the American College of Cardiology/American Health Association released, with the blessings of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, the 2013 guide on Cholesterol, the guide to replace ATP III. Ignored was the fact that guideline ES16 confidently stated that limiting dietary cholesterol did not have sufficient evidence to continue advising individuals to limit it in their food.r
