We’ve all done it. We’re smack in the middle of a ho-hum, so-so, not going anywhere relationship. But, we don’t break up. We stay. We go out for linguini and clams every Friday night, have a sleepover every Saturday night, and continue on as though we might actually want to be with this person on a permanent basis. Except, of course, that we don’t. And it’s not that there’s anything wrong with him (or her), except that he’s just not “The One.” Then, we start to think of our alte atives. What will happen if we break it off?

Okay, let’s get past the fact that in our greatest moments of weakness or weirdness most of us may have inadvertently looked through our guy’s bedside table (for hand lotion!) while he was otherwise occupied, or casually inventoried the dry cleaning receipts, straw wrappers and lint in his jacket pocket. But here’s the bottom line, ladies: snooping is bad for relationships. There are two reasons we snoop: rampant insecurity and female intuition. Insecurity: Let’s say you’re madly in love. Things are going great.

You like him, but does he really like you? Is there any way to tell how well a first date is going? 1) What day of the week did your date ask you out? It’s generally a good sign if your date asks you out with a few days notice — it means he’s thinking about you and wants to lock in weekend plans. Bad sign? If he calls you a few hours before he wants to go out. Usually that means you were the date of last resort, or he had a cancellation. First Date Fix: Don’t make a last-minute date. If he likes you, he’ll give you more notice next time.

Dear Lisa, I just got jacked around pretty good by a gal. I’m too nice, as people say, I just don’t want to play games. I haven’t done anything yet that can be construed as being a jerk about it. (Just an email venting a little, but nothing mean.) I have never been able to play the game when I’ve given my heart to someone, and then found out that they are the fickle, turn-on-a-dime type. It always catches me by surprise and leaves me weakened and shell-shocked. I never win the game at that point.

Lisa, I believe that a large part of my problem is that I am what you referred to as a “nightmare girl.” I don’t know how to be one of those “dream girls.” I can hold it together for anywhere from a few days to a few months, but I get sooooo incredibly insecure that I end up losing it. I mean, I go crazy. I turn into a raging bi*ch, pick a fight, and think he’s doing all kinds of horrible things behind my back, etc.

Dear Lisa, I broke up with my boyfriend back in January. I was going through a lot of personal problems and he was working a lot. We lived almost 1,000 miles apart. I felt like he didn’t care anymore and thought I’d dump him before he dumped me. The thing is, I don’t know why I thought breaking up was the answer because I didn’t believe it as I was saying it. We decided to be friends and stay in touch. This worked for a while until he started acting like he wanted to be back together.

1) “We Need to Talk.” Nothing puts up a guy’s defenses faster than those four little words. Why? No woman ever says , “We need to talk — I’ve been thinking you should play golf more often.” or “We need to talk — my hot supermodel friend is going to spend bikini season in our spare bedroom.” Guys associate we need to talk with trouble ahead. What to do? If you do need to talk, just start right in.
