t's no big surprise that meditation isn't always accomplish-able. Family, friends, work and even strangers can get in the way of working on relaxing. Thoughts, sounds, too much coffee, anxiety and even fear are some other culprits. The list goes on and on. So what are you to do when sitting down to meditate just isn't happening? Here's something I discovered. It's called, "The 'Shut it Up' Method." (I'm sure you see where this is going.)

“Jesus Christ knew he was God. So wake up and find out eventually who you really are. In our culture, of course, they’ll say you’re crazy and you’re blasphemous, and they’ll either put you in jail or in a nut house (which is pretty much the same thing). However if you wake up in India and tell your friends and relations, ‘My goodness, I’ve just discovered that I’m God,’ they’ll laugh and say, ‘Oh, congratulations, at last you found out.” ~ Alan W. Watts Spiritual Awakening. Finding out. I remember the day I found out.

Ah the great meditation practice killer: Boredom. It sneaks up oh so silently, without warning. One minute you're meditating and the next you wish you weren't sitting your beautiful darrier on that pretty meditation cushion. What started out as the purest of intentions to connect to inner peace has turned into a colorless continuation of monotonous moments. All of a sudden the intention of relaxing into your self turns into, "To hell with this ish! I got better things to do." And just like that, that day's practice has gone down the drain.

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Martita Robinson

  • Emotions and thoughts are essential. They are a part of living the human experience.
  • Being emotionally well isn't about being at peace all the time. Its not about how little you feel sad, anxious or angry. Its about how well you can allow the Flow as those emotions come. Can you allow yourself to have those feelings as you experience them? Accept them? And finally let them go? That's emotional wellness. That's mental stability. If you sit and lament over them or beat yourself up over them, even push them away because obviously adults shouldn't feel this way--you're denying yourself peace, wellness and yes, love. So go back to kid status. Have a fit. Cry. Allow yourself to be scared. Be who you are as you are being it. Your power is in the Flow!
  • Imagine yourself as a magnificent gobblet. In that gobblet you hold everything good within you. Your memories, your dreams, your hopes--all that is good. You also hold the other side of that--the pain. There is fear, anger and sadness that's collected from your past. Traumatic memories, opinions and experiences which (oftentimes unknowingly) create depression, anxiety and anything else painful in your life. The way to heal is to spill all that out. How do you spill it out? You tip your cup. Tip your cup by talking about it. Tip your cup by writing about it. Tip your cup by allowing yourself to be who you are as you are being it. The more you can accept who you are, the more you are tipping your cup.
  • There has to come a point of surrender before true healing occurs. You've got to be at a point where you can't carry the load by yourself anymore. Turning and trusting in an invisible force, wholeheartedly, with every ounce of your being, brings you to a new level of existence. Through your surrender, you connect to the divine. This is when the sacred self is discovered. God says, "Let me wrap you in my arms from within." Then you begin to see how powerful you truly are, and a transformation begins.
