Beginning therapy is a courageous, healthy, and empowering act. However it is not always an easy step to take and you will be best served gathering some important information before you choose your therapist. Some considerations include--will the therapist understand and be able to help me, will the therapist listen to me or be more interested in telling me what to do?
A meeting to assess whether or not the therapist is a good match for you is appropriate and important. Here are some areas to assess: years of experience, certifications, number of hours a year in training and in what subjects, number of hours per year receiving supervision, time in personal therapy, grievances filed against the therapist, neat and organized in appearance, clean and neat office, calm and friendly personality.
As you begin therapy you will not know what exactly to expect but with this information you have a head start on recognizing if the therapist you choose has the fundamental experience, training, and personality to help you and to give you the tools and experiences you need to heal.
