Last week I was blessed to co-lead our Inside Out Business Retreat here in sunny Spain. We had a beautiful group of practitioners in the room all intent on growing their businesses. The main topic of the retreat was to help our participants get comfortable and become successful with having a sales conversation. We shared just how that is possible without it being pushy, sleazy, awkward, and most of all how it can be fun and enjoyable.

I belong to a mastermind group, but we haven't been meeting up so frequently over the past year and so when we finally caught up the other day it was lovely to hear how everyone is getting along in their life and business. One of the ladies has written a book, and I thought she would have had it published by now since the last time we spoke a few months ago that was the plan. The book is pretty much her life story which illustrates how she came through her trials and tribulations with the intention of helping others to do the same.

What do you do when cashflow is down, or even non-existent? Well the first place most people look is to the experts. So Googling “how to make cash fast” or calling up a friend who has done what you want to do or is bringing in money doing what you do is often the first port of call. I know it has been for me. I was recently asked by a friend why I attended the silent retreat with Mooji a couple of years ago. And probably, more importantly, why I would do it again since that linked into the topic of the conversation. This was because we were discussing the role of the “seeker”. You know that part of us that wants to find the answer - the answer to life, the answer to what is our purpose, the answer to what life is all about or any other question along those lines. As long as we are in the role of the seeker, that’s what stops us finding “the answer.”

This week I have had many interactions on email and in conversation with people citing confidence as being their biggest struggle in growing their business. They have either stated: “I have a lack of confidence” “I want to feel more confident” “I just don’t have the confidence I need to ……….(fill in the blank)” So here I am, following my own advice, and offering a solution to my ideal client’s number 1 struggle hoping that it will serve you too on some level. Most clients come to work with me because they want to bring in more clients and they generally have no idea what to do next. They have been trying different strategies including the latest and greatest Twitter tips, the 7 step plan to successful blogging, the next best thing to sliced bread on Linked In, the hottest tip on selling e-books, and so on. But there is not a paying client in sight and they want to know what they have to do to change it. My first question is always "so who is your ideal client?"

While I am not a great believe in the one size fits all system when it comes to marketing your business - I am a firm believe in certain core marketing tools that are simple, down to earth, common sense and work! One of those is language. Now this is an extremely lovely big hearted woman who provides a much needed transformational service and has been working with clients, but without getting paid for it for a very long time.

It’s not sexy, but it’s the truth. What do you think I am talking about? Well, if you are anything like my client, you will have no idea either, and even when I said it out loud specifically, he had no idea what I was talking about. You might be able to empathize. He is in a tough position financially – he needs cash flow now. He is busy, busy, busy – building his marketing funnel as he has been taught to do – spending lots of time tweaking his free giveaway, creating autoresponders, getting graphics just right, writing his blog posts, sending out tweets, and so on and so on.
