Assisting seniors to slip proof their home is an important part of in-home care. The National Safety Council reports that, “falls are the second leading cause of injury death for ages 55-79, but become even more prevalent for individuals over the age of 80. When all those age 65 and older are combined, falls account for 50 percent of all injury deaths.” Making the time to slip proof a home can prevent the heartache and injury a fall may bring to those caring for a parent. Not long ago I had to help slip proof my parents’ home after Dad fell and broke his ankle.

Finding in home elderly assistance frequently helps the elderly continue living alone. A good case in point is my widowed sister who was living alone and becoming a bit unsteady on her feet. This prompted her family to purchase an emergency service plan that provided a senior assistance device that enabled her to call for assistance in case of an accident. Who hasn't seen the commercial with the female falling and crying "I've fallen and I can't get up," and not felt her fright and hoped that no one you knew would ever be in the same spot.

I sometimes wonder if a doctor knows you’re on Medicare they will just “load you up” with all kinds of prescriptions or supplies and not even payMedicare help, Medicaid help, trust attention to your condition or other prescriptions you might be on. My dilemma is that my husband, who has congestive heart failure, went to see an endocrinologist the other day.

One of the best resources I have found for all types of great information and Medicare Extra Help is the Medicare Rights Center. They are a national, nonprofit consumer service organization. With nearly 45 million people on Medicare they are there to help not just beneficiaries, but their caregivers as well. Since 1989 they have been helping people with Medicare understand their rights and benefits with the programs. Although they couldn’t help me last year, I did call them to complain about the outrageous price increases in Medicare Part D premiums.
