ABC’s of Self-Realization: Becoming Balanced
Written by Lene StJohn
On the way to becoming “self-realized”, becoming balanced is a boon. My boyfriend calls it “living in moderation.” The whole concept is to find ways to keep all aspects of your life in balance – your thoughts, your beliefs, your words, your actions, your emotions, and your feelings. It’s not easy, especially if you have been raised in a very dysfunctional background.
If your experience has been to always play the victim, the rescuer, the scapegoat, the perfect child, the controller, or whatever role you have taken upon yourself, it seems, at times, impossible to even realize that have taken on that role. If that's what you were born into, that's all you know – or so you believe.
The song, “Shower the People” by James Taylor, says, “You can play the game; you can act out the part, though you know it wasn’t written for you.” It’s one of my all-time favorite songs because the truth is, deep down, you truly know that any role that doesn’t reflect real, genuine love was not written for you. The innate greatness of the Spirit inside youknows that you were not created to be any of those roles mentioned above.
In the early 90s, I was a staff person for one of the most amazing self-knowledge, self-awareness, self-realization seminars ever designed. One of the most influential songs ever played in those seminars was called “It’s in Every One of Us” by Cliff Richard. It speaks about the fact that it’s within every one of us to be wise, to find our hearts and open both our eyes. It says we can all know everything, without ever knowing why. I believe that with all my heart. I think I even know why we can all know everything. I believe it’s because of the Spirit I mentioned above that dwells within us. The One Who’s Image we reflect. He was “First Thought.” He was the Originator of Complete Balance. He created Complete Love, Complete Acceptance, Complete Peace, Complete Wisdom, and Complete Knowing. Because of Him, we have the ability and the wisdom to become balanced, if we so choose.
The steps towards becoming balanced take discipline and determination. They take fortitude and gumption and the understanding that we are all worthy to live in a life filled with integrity, honor, understanding and love. The most important step in this process is to learn to love yourself, to value yourself enough to realize that you are worth whatever it takes to become whole. You can never give to others what you don’t see within yourself. You can only give all those quality gifts to the world if you learn to first find them within. They are there. All of them. Trust me. God or Spirit or Higher Consciousness, whatever you choose to call Him/Her, has no favorites. He bestowed every single one of His creation with these innate gifts. Some of us have more of those gifts than others, but none of us is any less valuable than any other. What you believe is what you shall see. Balance equals wholeness and wholeness equals heaven on earth. So shall it be, if we so desire.
