In the Conclusion to 'Walden', Thoreau writes, "If a man loses pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured, or far away."
Aquarians are eclectic and imaginative thinkers ~ sometimes erratic, sometimes brilliant and always stubborn. Yes, Aquarians are thinkers who know much about the world, but knowing "everything" often becomes an obstacle to their own happiness.
As Einstein said, "Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds."
An Aquarian finds and defines who they are in terms of their own uniqueness within a group or organization. Their issues are about connecting with others of like mind ~ or requiting others to their way of thinking and forming their own group. But even then it can seem as if they remain outside the group looking in and will quickly distance themselves from any member of the group or even the group itself if the thoughts and ideas of the individual or group begin to diverge from their own.
It doesn't matter what sort of group ~ not all Aquarians are progressive ~ think Sara Palin or Dick Chaney. The group can be as different as a "Old Boy Network" or an astrological society. But most often the group Aquarians become affiliated with will believe it has the answers for the true and right embodiment of society.
Aquarius is a freedom loving sign but the freedom it wants is to change all of society to what "it thinks" society should be. To be honest most Aquarians are really not happy letting others have their freedom, especially if the other's thoughts, ideas or view of how things should be differs from their own.
Remember Aquarius is a stubborn fixed Air sign and no matter how radical ~ or conventional ~ an Aquarian's ideas are, once they are arrived at they are not easily changed ~ so from the Aquarian perspective, society must change to their ideas of how the world should be. Then in an effort to make that happen, they join force with a group of like minds.
In attempting to define Aquarius, it should be remembered that Saturn ~ the planet of tradition, and Uranus ~ the planet of rebellion, are both associated with Aquarius. This results in some very different types of Aquarian individuals. Though all are somehow radical, some are revolutionaries, some forward thinking (Uranus ruled), while others simply rebel against change and become conservatives and champions of the status quo (Satu
ruled).
Yet, no matter what their views are ~ Satu
or Uranus ~ right or wrong ~ right or left ~ Aquarians feel they are, as their symbol suggests, the servants of humanity who pour out the water of knowledge to quench the thirst of the world.
So, are Aquarius Sun people truly humanitarian?
Yes and no ~ you have to have to look at the whole chart of each individual with a Sun in Aquarius to see if they are truly humanitarian. However, as a fixed air sign, Aquarius will latch onto a cause that "they believe" is for the betterment of society and pursue it with relentless determination. And we all know a few Aquarius Sun people who are extremely apathetic and could care less about the state of the world or the less fortunate ~ so it depends.
The word "pro-active" really seems more appropoiate. Nearly every Aquarian can be described that way. The word humanitarian suggests more of a benevolent personality. Certainly there are some really benevolent Aquarians, but there is just such a wide range ~ they go from Keith Olbermann to Glenn Beck. But I'd say no matter what their views, they're always involved, at least believe they're doing good and are usually polarizing. So Sarah Palin, Dick Chaney, Ronald Reagan and Oral Roberts do have this in common with Oprah Winfrey, Huey Newton, Betty Friedan, Jimmy Hoffa and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Aquarius is about the freedom to be an individual and the uncompromising expression of self. To choose your own path and do what you want to do. Aquarius has an absolute loyalty to truth, but whose truth? Well, their truth of course! Aquarians do have a radical independence of mind.

Dear Keith and Maura, Do you think it means anything if a guy you like at work happens to give you his cell phone number out of the blue, or if you ask that guy – joking around – if he can give you a ride home from work and he has a big grin on his face? I work at a grocery store ...

How Could This Be About Me?
Dear Keith and Maura, I just found your website and podcasts yesterday and they totally resonate with me. I am a very active youthful 55. I was widowed suddenly at 32 with 2 babies. My soulmate died and I was lost and devastated. I banged around for 10 years raising my boys, working and trying to find a similar loving relationship as I had. I met losers, liars, cheaters, alcoholics, and abusers.
