What is spirituality? This is a koan in itself because spirituality is beyond the intellect. So anything that can be said in words about what is spirituality is going to miss it.
Still, we can point to what is spirituality. And spirituality is this very moment. You do not need to leave this moment to find spirituality, because if you do this, you will miss it.
To realize what is spirituality, notice what is here beyond your thinking. Do not allow thinking to define for you what is here in this moment, rather notice what is here beyond thinking.
The only way really to experience what is here beyond thinking is through feeling. If you take away thinking in this moment there is a subtle sense of feeling. You can feel a subtle sense of being, of existing. Take away all thinking in this moment and still there is a subtle experience that you exist.
Close your eyes and notice the sensations, notice the feeling of existing in this moment. The mind will recognize that there is something here beyond words, beyond thinking. There is a sense that you exist, a feeling of being, of existing. If you turn your attention to this feeling, without trying to define it, understand or describe it, then the clarity of what is spirituality, of what is here in this moment will begin to reveal itself.
And the experience of this is peace, is bliss. Perhaps there will be fear there. Because the mind is not used to experiencing what is here beyond thinking. The mind is uncomfortable experiencing what cannot be known through the intellect. So there has to be surrender. The willingness to allow yourself to feel what is here.
It is not something you should force. Rather, let go of all control, all trying to do it, figure it out. Allow yourself to feel what is here. Because what spirituality is begins here, in this experience. In letting yourself fall out of thinking and into what is here beyond thought.
This is one method of meditation to discover what is spirituality.
Another method of meditation to discover what is spirituality is to simply surrender.
Allow everything in this moment to be as it is. Allow your breathing to be as it is, allow the body to be as it is, allow your feelings to be as they are and allow the sensations to be as they are. Even allow thoughts to come and go. But instead of getting caught up in your thinking, let go of the thoughts as they arise. Don’t push them away or try and control them in any way, just allow the thoughts to come and go.
The key in this is to let go of control. Let go of trying to attain something, change something. Just allow yourself to be as you are and notice it. Notice it without labeling, judging or even describing. Just notice what is here and let it go.
Another way to experience what is spirituality is through sound. There are some unique CDs that awaken spiritual experience in you. So simply by listening to the CDs, you experience deep states of meditation and bliss. How Could This Be About Me?
Dear Keith and Maura, I just found your website and podcasts yesterday and they totally resonate with me. I am a very active youthful 55. I was widowed suddenly at 32 with 2 babies. My soulmate died and I was lost and devastated. I banged around for 10 years raising my boys, working and trying to find a similar loving relationship as I had. I met losers, liars, cheaters, alcoholics, and abusers.
