At least two creativity theorists (Csikszentmahalyi & Piirto) argue that creativity (with a big “C”) relies upon a certain degree of mastery over a domain in order for a creator to be successful. Mastery is also needed, they claim, for creative products to be widely accepted and recognized by ...

Two common questions I am asked around grant writing are: 1. Can you pay a grant writer a percentage of the grant? 2. Can compensation for grant writers be written into the grant? 5 PAYMENT ISSUES This article includes 5 issues related to paying grant writers to keep in mind in hiring a grant writer or being hired as one. Included are paying a commission from the grant and including fees in the grant itself:
QUIZ: EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE CHECK Each adult person has different types of emotional baggage. If you have been lied to and/or cheated on, you may have a fear of deception. You may show signs of being overly suspicious of others and guarded. You expect the worst in most situations and push others away from you in order to avoid being hurt again. image If you were abandoned in any previous relationships, you may have a fear of abandonment. You may show signs of being needy, insecure and/or disconnected from others.
There are lots of causes that will arise from our every day life. They are probably not sufficiently addressed with the press outlets. Nor can their particular effectiveness be justified with the expensive billboards installed across the nation. You will discover special methods for dealing with this kind of causes. They're way less costly, and even more trendy. These colorful and powerful mediums would be the silicone wristbands. These kinds of wristbands can be found in num
Two common questions I am asked around grant writing are:
1. "I don't have the time." Michelle Obama has the time to be a mother, a First Lady, the nation's advocate of service, and have fabulous arms. What's your excuse? 2. "Why do I have to volunteer? I want to watch Lost." Because if you spend your entire life not giving your time to causes greater than yourself, you will be like the lazy jerk who reads the neighbor's Sunday newspaper without paying any money. When you die and the gatekeeper of the immortal realm personally asks
While many newlyweds spend their honeymoon backpacking through Europe or jetting off to a far away tropical location, very few kick off the rest of their lives by working in meagre conditions without pay. But that’s changing, thanks to a growing trend amongst 21st century honeymooners called ‘honeyteering.’ Honeyteering is where just-married couples volunteer for a worthy cause in the developing world, rather than the indulgent two weeks on a beach. A growing trend in the Un
Engaging followers who will become volunteers and donors is hard enough in the good times; now, your nonprofit is competing with disasters near and far that drown out your message. After all, even with Twitter, YouTube and all manner of media operating 24/7, there is still only so much personal “band width” that people can accommodate. How can you possibly create credible publicity with a pinched budget when everyone’s using the same methods? Consider writing and self-publishing your story as a book to distinguish your group and raise your profile. Why write?
Through a series of acts of kindness, this hospice volunteer stumbled on an innovative method of simultaneously enhancing the quality of life for the aged, the infirm, those with end-of-life issues and similar others, while permanently honoring the memory of a loved one with an honor legacy of exceptional beauty. At the grand age of 90, my beloved Miss Billie started to lose strength in her legs and was given a series of exercises to build up her stamina. Given that she was s

The meaning of Christmas is different for different people. Like For most of the people, it's a religious day, for some itâs just a holiday. Mistake #1 - Don’t Follow Instructions One of the top two reasons funders give for denying proposals is because applicants fail to follow instructions. Now, before you disregard this one as being “too simple,” take a look at one federal government agency’s instructions. Their guidelines include: • When sending the application packet, do not use staples, paper clips or fasteners. Nothing should be attached, stapled, folded or pasted. • All type should be printed in Times New Roman, 12-point font. • All margins must be at least one inch and only one column per page.

If you would like to find an enjoyable and fulfilling way to spend time with your family, consider family volunteering. Imagine you and your family planting trees at the local Arbor Day event. Or maybe you’d enjoy helping out at the local furniture or food bank to help other families regain their dignity after a tragic fire or natural disaster.
More good news about Vitamin D AGAIN! With March being National Deep Vein Thrombosis Awareness Month (I'm not making this up!), you would think that a study showing that prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis, also called DVT, through sunlight exposure would have captured some attention.
Mistake #6 – No Pre-Proposal Contact In a study of 10,000 federal grant proposals, the only variable that was statistically significant in separating the funded and rejected proposals was whether or not the grant writer made a pre-proposal contact with the funder. Once you have determined some potential funders for your project, the importance of contacting them before you submit your proposal is paramount. Consider these facts:
Have you heard of the term “seed money”? Basically, it refers to how grant funders prefer to fund a project the first time, plant the seed for future growth. The funder expects that you will be able to sustain the program once it’s started. Why? Donors are not interested in adopting a project indefinitely. Funders want assurances that the project they fund – or the benefits it generates – will endure over time. Ask yourself 2 questions: 1) What kind of assurance can you give that the idea or project you’re proposing will endure over time?

One moment I was excited, driving up highway I-5, dreaming with billions of dollars. The next, I was hungry, penniless in Stockton, CA, wondering how I would make it home to Sparks. I was enjoying my drive, recalling the half-a-billion dollar endowment campaign I just launched two weeks ago ...
I remember something from my community college economics class that economy had something to do with scarcity. All along I've been reading post after post about how to get what we want because all we need is available in abundance. Seems to me we need to abolish the monetary system. What good is money if all we ever need is available in abundant supply? Money creates the illusion of scarcity. If we abolish money, what do we do about fear and greed? Has anyone been to a buffet

It is possible to end homelessness. How? There are three steps to ending homelessness. These steps can be approached individually or at the same time.nn Step One: Open public toilets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with showers and laundry facilities. nnHaving worked with people in the streets for over twenty years, the reason for public facilities seems obvious to me, but perhaps it is not obvious to everyone: human dignity.nnHoused people generally have access to toilets and

"Poverty wonât allow him to lift up his head; dignity wonât allow him to bow it down." --Madagasy Proverb In meeting women in and around the markets of Kigali, we rarely found a business that employed more than one woman and maybe one or two of her youngsters. There had to be something more than selling tomatoes or rice or baskets; besides, I wanted to see for myself what i
Women Embrace Your Truths 1. Never Give Up on Your Dreams It is okay to help your man achieve his dreams but never ever give up on your own. Your dreams are just as important as his dreams. It is okay to encourage him to achieve his ultimate goals but do not lose sight of your own dreams and goals. 2. Do Not Drastically Change Your Look For Others It is okay to make subtle changes to your look because you want to try different things or to keep your man interested. But never change yourself by plastic surgery or other drastic means just to get a man’s attention.

Volunteers make many organizations possible. Volunteers donate their time, effort and often professional expertise in order to help organizations they care about. For the most part, doctors believe that the Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are usually related to an 'impingement' of the median nerve that runs down the wrist. But Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is simply a collection of symptoms and not a disease itself.

There's something about the idea off covering great distances that brings out the fundraiser in people. If it's not a breast cancer walk, it's an AIDS ride. If not an AIDS ride , a marathon team running for leukemia. The list goes on. I myself did an MS ride, and I have recently written about an 11-year-old who is walking from Tampa, Fla., to Washington, D.C., to raise awareness for youth homelessness. What all these treks have in common, aside from being fundraisers, is that

Volunteering makes a massive contribution to society, filling crucial gaps left by government and other organizations. But deciding to offer your services as a volunteer isn't only about a desire to do good in society. Take it from Austin Alexander Burridge , an experienced collegiate volunteer whoâs been giving back to his community since his youth. 1)

Current thinking has us believe that age-related hearing loss is an inevitable consequence of getting older, but is it really? Hundreds of studies from around the world show severe vitamin deficiencies as causes of this loss. Even more importantly replacing the missing vitamins improved the hearing of vast numbers of people, making hearing loss simply another one of many age-related problems preventable with good nutrition. When most of us think of getting older, we think of canes to walk, glasses to see and hearing aids to hear.
Walking through the green hills of Tennessee Valley bordered by the brash jubilant display of purple lupines and sweet shy hellos of delicate yellow wildflowers while connecting with Melinda, the founder of Womenâs Earth Alliance and Amira her right hand assistant I circled back to that place of insight that â yes- service does make one feel good. Dan Boyleâs Oscar-winning film, Slumdog Millionaire, set in the slums of Mumbai, skillfully portrays the conditions of Indian slums and, more importantly, has ignited public interest in the many children who inhabit these slums. Non-profitable organizations do not run to earn a profit as they run for the welfare of humanity. Celiac Disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease caused by a genetic inability to digest the protein portion of many common grains- including those in wheat. This undigested part of the grain, called gluten, is then attacked by the body's own immune system, causing inflammation and damage to the intestines where nutrients are absorbed. Standard Celiac Disease Symptoms, also known as Gluten Sensitivity, include abdominal pain and weight loss; but rarely is the same from patient to patient.
I have been in service to others since I was 16 years old when I did my first walk for hunger. I still have the card we used to get each mile marked with a stamp in the shape of a foot. That was 37 years ago and I do not think I have had a time in my life when I wasn't giving back or volunteering. It was the way I made new friends, some who have been in my life forever. It was the way I had fun, planning events, doing fundraisers, celebrating results. It was how I humbled mys
A new study shows that 25% of the elderly who are in home care have reactions to prescribed drugs. This is ONE in FOUR elderly that have REPORTED drug reactions!! The elderly, the report states, are now taking 6 or more different prescribed drugs on a daily basis! In contrast to the growing media trend of reporting reactions due to ERRORS in drug prescribing, these are "properly" prescribed medications. Yet 25% of our most vulnerable population is having reactions to the drugs that are being properly prescribed for their medical conditions.
Candida Albicans is a common yeast EVERYWHERE. It shows up in the environment, on our bodies and in our bodies. It competes for space with 'good' bacteria on the skin and anywhere that it is warm and moist in the body- such as the mouth, constantly wet skin and the genitals to name a few places that it colonizes. When your immune system is good, Candida Albicans is usually not even noticeable, but if your immunity is compromised from stress, disease and other problems, then it may dominate the space that it's in- wherever that is- and cause a candida infection.
Time is a commodity. Itâs been compared with money. We only have so much of it in this lifetime, so time is precious. And how we spend our time says a lot about what is important to us. Recently Iâve had a big change in where Iâve been finding my time spent â and it has surprised me, in many wonderful ways. Iâve done the career thing, a couple of times over in a couple of different incarnations. And Iâve done the mom thing â wholeheartedly: from carpools and kar
Symptoms of kidney infection are painful and uncomfortable. Life stops until the problem is taken care of. Usually symptoms of kidney infection require a trip to the doctor's office as well as a regimen of antibiotics and an anti fungal for the yeast infection that follows.
Using any of the social networking tools can be overwhelming. Initial questions come to mind: What am I doing here? How come people say this is so great? What's so great about it? There are so many people here - how do I get their attention? Who is an expert? How have they achieved that status? Why do some people have 21,000 - are you kidding me - 21,000 contacts? How much time is enough time to spend on any of the sites? Which one is the "right" one for me? I could go on.
Cardiomyopathy is a rare but frequently fatal heart condition in infants and children. In many cases, doctors are unable to find the cause, and severe cases need to stay in the hospital while waiting for their last hope at life- a heart transplant. But whole teams of specialists at major medical centers across the nation may be overlooking vitami D deficiency as a cause of cardiomyopathy, and children are dying because of it. Cardiomyopathy is a rare condition where a child's heart becomes enlarged and too weak to pump blood properly.
Recently, in a conversation with a community banking representative about the business of nonprofit agencies and civic engagement, she became quickly confused by my use of two terms. Advocacy was one of them. Governance the other. But she was a banker and couldn’t be expected to know what these terms were, unless she understood nonprofits.
I should be jumping with joy. All our class XII students have passed their examinations and this for the 8th year running. But before I could get down and savour the good news a mail dropped in my inbox informing me that one of our main donors would not be able to meet their monthly commitment for they next 4 months. It was a huge blow and I am completely shattered. How would we manage as without that particular donation there was no way we could survive. If I were running a

I heard a wise phrase the other day: "in every moment, you are either serving or being served." The give and take, or giving and receiving, is a constant balance of life. How often to you serve others, and how often do you allow others to serve you? Is it easier for you to give than to receive? In my last blog, I asked the question of "Why Don't We Volunteer?" And issued a Dare to Care as a means to challenge all of us to get out of our routine, and lend a hand to help suppor
I don't know the exact moment when I let some of my reservations go but I think it happened when I was on the back of a motoconcho (motorcycle) without a helmut zipping up a mountain in the Dominican Republic. I would breath in the warm air and feel my excitement radiate around me! I felt like a model ~ a free spirit! It was fantastic! My destinat
The summer is the perfect time to start volunteering for worthy causes. The weather is nice, there is generally a more uplifting aura that pervades in the air, and there are many events and causes around the nation that are looking for volunteers that care for their cause (not to say that any other time is a bad time to start... but you get what I mean...).rnSo you decide that this summer, you're going to start volunteering for those causes. But now that you've decided to vol
No one seems to have enough time to get things done. Goals, programs, products, services, customers, relationship farming, tending the herd, goals and family. Every minute of every day brings new demands on what little time we have to pay attention to them.
We can help a homeless person by serving him/her food, a blanket and/or necessary items. It's a pretty simple and wonderful thing to do. In this article, I would like to propose a way to share items with homeless people. This distribution method of serving an unhoused person has worked for Children Helping Poor and Homeless People volunteers for over twenty-two years. I will discuss "the charitable giving of food" in detail in a later article. Let's start from the beginning -
Perhaps you imagined that the people on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder would be pinching every last penny to make ends meet. If so, youâre surprisingly wrong . According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey , the poorer you are in the United States, the larger the percentage of your income youâre inclined to give to charity. So inclined, in fact, that you often end up giving more than your pocketbook can really handle. The research, cond
I am reading a fascinating book called Management Rewired (http://www.amazon.com/Management-Rewired-Feedback-Surprising-Lessons/dp/159184262X) which applies new findings in cognitive science to management. Yesterday on the train home from New York I read a chapter that blew me away. Studies show that people are not motivated by money (or deterred by punishment). If you try to get children to stop eating sweets by threatening them, they will not learn to stay out of the cookie
Get Involved! Volunteer! This administration's determination to address recession fallout spans beyond the reach of bail out dollars, and into old fashioned barn-raising, with a passionate call to service. The charitable giving of food is giving food to a person without charging that person any money for the food. It is true compassion and can be life saving. When we want to serve food to someone living outside, we consider a few things. 1. We âserveâ food to homeless people, we âfeedâ animals. Many years ago, Michael, a homeless man, brought this point to my attention. He explained how it felt to homeless people when they heard that the people serving them were âa fe
