Addiction results from using a substance repeatedly to cope with emotional and/or physical pain. Family history of addiction is a factor in the severity of the problem and one’s ability and willingness to stop, but using substances to deal with emotional pain prevents us from learning effective behavioral coping mechanisms. How do we know when we have healthy fear versus unhealthy fear about the latest pandemic? Healthy fear stimulates our awareness and drives us to appropriate action. Unhealthy fear is not as effective because we are over stimulated. We are hypervigilant, stressed, and our body is tense, all of which makes us less capable of seeing reality clearly, and less able to respond appropriately. Imagine that your body's capacity to cope is like a bucket. The bucket represents your strength, your immune system, and your resistance to the stresses of life. Each time you put yourself under stress, it fills the bucket a little bit. Perhaps you are having a difficult time working with a new boss, then you argue with your partner and children. After that you catch the flu, then there is a rumour about job cuts. Each thing contributes a bit more stress to the bucket.
Generally, society works against us discovering and being ourselves. We are taught to be what society and our parents want us to be. There is little faith in the brilliance and miracle of who we are. Instead, there is typically a fear that we are not enough and we have to push to be the best we can be to get what we want. We have to make ourselves into what we are supposed to be, and that is (we are told) not an easy road.
An important piece of productivity conce s what time of day you select to work on which activities. Everyone has a natural time during the day when they are "UP" (prime time) and a natural time when they are "DOWN" (down time). During prime time, your brain is "on"; your batteries are charged and you're able to focus. During down time, your brain feels "slow"; it's difficult to muddle through your work. It is 1999, and I am sitting in the consultant's office. He closes my file and looks me straight in the eye. "Yes, you have ME, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome," he tells me. Recently, I was talking with a client about her financial situation. The conversation went something like this: "I do so much of this spiritual stuff, and I'm happy all the time," she said. No matter how positive our outlook in life, unpleasant things are going to happen which bring us down. People betray us, hurt us and disappoint us. People attack us with their spiteful words. They misjudge us, take credit for our work or malign us. When we experience this sort of thing in our daily lives, it is very difficult to remain positive. Sometimes when we are little and things go wrong, we think we have to take charge and fix things. We feel it’s up to us to make it better. Johnny Cash From The Darkness To The Light I recently watched the movie on the life of Johnny Cash called “I Walk The Line” and have been listening to Johnny’s hit album of 1968 called “Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison”. The story and the movie parallel each other in the depiction of the deviant sides of Cash and the conflict of the criminal element within himself to become more whole. In the album “Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison” Cash sings songs of the experiences of a reckless, unlawful life that divulges the angry world of the criminal.
Recently I found myself in the hospital with acute appendicitis. After my appendix was removed, I had a several-day hospital stay recovering from the surgery. In the book "A Stroke of Insight", Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, the author and a brain scientist experienced a stroke and recovery. Jill talks about how clearly she saw and felt different people’s energies as they came into her hospital room; sometimes their energy was very painful and sometimes it was very loving and supportive.
If you do for others and neglect your own needs, you are not nurturing yourself and you are not aligned with your true self. Often people are told they are selfish if they think of themselves and and put their needs before others, but really we strengthen ourselves when we listen to our own needs. We are born into the world only with ourselves—this is our main gift to the world—us. So when we bring ourselves fully into the world, others benefit. We come home to ourselves by listening to our bodies. When we are in sync and aligned, we feel strong, and content.
