What he meant by this statement was that you have 30 seconds to describe what you do in a way that is not only easy to understand but it is compelling and interesting to others. On the surface this sounds pretty easy.
During the past couple of weeks I’ve gotten a multitude of requests from readers who own townhouses and apartments. They’ve all petitioned me to devote one article to their situations. You can make some major adjustments to the entranceway.

“Clutter: 1: (Verb) To fill or cover with scattered or disordered things that impede movement or reduce effectiveness -- often used with up; 2: (Noun) a crowded or confused mass or collection; things that clutter a place”. ~ Merriam-Webster Dictionary. I grew up in New Hampshire where winters were always white. This was ski country and somehow I was 18 and a senior in high school before I enrolled in ski lessons (only to find every single classmate in my group was a 6-year old first grader). Those little kids were zooming down the slopes while I was stiffly towering over them as I slowly made my way down the baby slopes. I cried when I fell down time after time and realized I was the worst skier in the bunch. But I stuck with the training and learned downhill skiing.
Some people seem to have all the luck, don't they? We all know someone who is well connected and constantly has advance knowledge of the best opportunities before everyone else does. Since correct feng shui encompasses all who reside in a home, the next two articles will be about some of the most important members of a family - the pets. Often forgotten about in books on the subject and sometimes even by professionals analyzing a space, they are family to those who share their lives with them. We’ll go into cats specifically. Next week’s article will be devoted to dogs.
Almost everyone I know is trying to "stay fit" or "get in shape" or "lose a few pounds." Health directives as well as personal experiences have pointed to the value of fitness. There's no question that healthy diets, consistent work-outs, and a constant vigilance to how we live our lives all contribute to better health. We live longer and live better if we're in shape. Along with this, we are also convinced that once we're in shape our life will go better. We'll be able to write that book, get that promotion, launch th
Good feng shui is about bringing balance and harmony to our living and working spaces. When ch’i (energy) is in positive alignment, we feel more relaxed. Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that is based on many common sense principles. For example, we don’t usually feel comfortable working with our backs to a door because it leaves us vulnerable to being startled by people sneaking up on us. One feng shui solution for this is to place a mirror so we always know who is entering the room behind us.
To many children, the closet is feared at night. To them behind its closed door there may be lurking a monster waiting to jump out! As one grows up, the closet loses its power to strike terror. However, without even realizing it, many adults try to punish it for their youthful traumas. As a penalty for past transgressions, their closets are never cleaned. They stuff them so they can’t breathe. Stripping the closet of any remaining respect, old, outworn, or forgotten objects are often just thrown into it.

Awakening Growing up, all around me were people who knew what they wanted to “be”. I had friends and classmates who knew they wanted to be social workers, museum curators, artists, scientists, and business owners. I particularly remember one classmate in junior high school, Monica, who told me at age 13 that she wanted to be an accountant. I was astonished. Why would anyone want to be that, I wondered, and how on earth could a 13-year-old have already decided that? I asked her why she had chosen that particular field.
Ever find yourself in a dream in a house? Yeah, sure, all the time. But did you ever find later on that you are in a house in waking life and you recognize the exact location from your dream? I have...too many times to mention. Dreams of this nature are a gift since I am a Feng Shui practitioner. I don't dream about every client's home this way.
Many different cultures consider the kitchen the heart of the home. In feng shui, the kitchen is considered the area of the home that sustains life and nourishes the family, as well as being a symbol of wealth. Because the inhabitants of the home depend on food to give them energy, it is especially important that this food be prepared in an area that has a good balance of Chi. It is also believed that any positive energy that exists in the kitchen will naturally be transferred to those working in the kitchen, which in turn will pass this energy on to those who eat the food.
Along with proper nutrition, air and water, restorative sleep is essential to health and well-being. Without a good night’s sleep, we function below our capacity to handle the demands of life, with varying consequences.
Living in northern climates necessitates a shift in mindset in terms of Feng Shui. When the temperatures and the snow start to fall, it’s important to consider how this changes your environment and how you need to make corresponding changes in how your Feng Shui is carried out. Doorways get piled with boots and jackets. Mittens and scarves might get strewn around. You can’t use your screened-in porch. Specifically selected and carefully positioned plants are buried by the white stuff. The pond freezes over; the sidewalks are buried. What happens to your Feng Shui?
In today's busy world, all too often a clean house is considered to be simply a luxury. With everything else that needs to be attended to during the day, it can be easy to skip cleaning chores in order to spend time on tasks that are viewed as being more important. However, what might you be sacrificing by not keeping your home clean, neat and de-cluttered? Because a messy home can have a detrimental effect on positive feng shui energy, your clutter may actually be causing you more problems than you might think.
"Flow" is definitely a key word in feng shui. When anything is stopped up, stagnation sets in and things come to a standstill. The blood and air in our bodies need to circulate for vital health, creativity, and sales need to move for increased wealth. Words and emotions also need to flow for loving relationships. So, is your life flowing? Where might you need to call in your "inner plumber" to unblock certain areas of your life? What rooms, closets and cabinets are calling your name? It's time to get honest and clear space in the areas of your life that are working and the ones that aren't.
Although often treated as though it has little impact on a family’s life, in Feng Shui the garage can have an enormous influence. The warp speed shift in social relationships and how we interact is due to social technologies, according to a July 2012 study, “The Social Economy: Unlocking values and productivity through social technologies,” by the McKinsey Global Institute.
Listen up Skypeople (that's us). If you have see James Cameron's epic 'Avatar' go see it again with feng shui eyes. These quotes from the film resonate deeply with feng shui. "All energy is only borrowed and soon you will have to give it back." "Our Great Mother does not take sides, Jake. She protects only the balance of life." " Everything is backwards now, like out there is the true world and in here is the dream." Feng shui principles tell us that every being and every inanimate object and space has an energy. We are surrounded by Qi (energy).
Feng shui is the ancient Chinese art of placement. The basic principle is that life-force energy, known in China as "chi", flows through your dwellings and has a powerful effect on the way you feel and think. The surrounding landscape as well as the objects, layout and emotions in your environment affect this flow of energy. When your space is filled with positive energy and symbols, you feel happy and motivated. To simplify, your goal is to maximize the positive energy and minimize the negative.
The past few years we've heard of how housing value in the states have been slammed and how some experts are even saying that we haven't seen the worse yet. Here in Canada however, and especially in Toronto, though we're seeing the market starting to soften a bit there's still a bit of competition going on and house values still remain fairly high. When you see a house listed with 'new price' or 'motivated seller', you know that's not a good sign. So what do you think about a house that checks the following boxes : - 5-minute walk away from a subway station
Good energy in a child's bedroom environment can make it easier to study, learn and grow. Let's take a look at how Feng Shui can help encourage success at school. 1. Designate a separate space for doing schoolwork.
You’ve heard the expression “love sickness”? The term goes back a long way and many greater writers tha I (Shakespeare's Sonnet 147 comes to mind) have covered the symptoms brilliantly. It hits most of us at some stage of life--we think we're in love and we've found "the one", the relationship ends yet we're still left holding the emotional baggage and it can be difficult to shake it off. People can carry the attachment to the wrong person for years and years. It can be crippling to men or women who never seem to be available emotionally when they finally meet a potential new lover.
In my previous articles I have explained the origin and the philosophy of the authentic Feng Shui. Now is the time to go into the core of the theory and see how Feng Shui really works. The Qi… Or Yoda’s words! At the heart of everything Feng Shui, and moreover in all Chinese metaphysics, there is the theory of the Qi. The Qi is the life force: called prana, pneuma, ki, etc. in other cultures. It surrounds us, and it is both internal and exte al.
Feng Shui is conce ed with the flow of energy in a space. One way to assess this flow is to determine how the energy moves through a home or office and whether there are places where it is stagnant or whether it flies through too quickly. Another way to assess the flow of energy is to determine what kind of filter it moves through when it first enters a space. You always want the energy near your front door to be enticing, offering a warm welcome as a first impression. A kitchen challenges this idea.
At least once a week I get a call or e-mail from someone who tells me they bought a book to set up the feng shui in their home but that instead of being helpful these books have left them feeling confused and frustrated. Just when they think they understand what the author is saying they read further and realize they have no idea what they’re supposed to do. It’s unfortunate that their experience with feng shui has left them frustrated rather than enlightened but not surprising.
With school getting out and kids being at home, the dynamics around the house will inevitably change. This is a good opportunity to mark the passage of time in your child's life by implementing Feng Shui in their bedroom. Without the rigidity of a school schedule to keep kids occupied, the summer might provide an opportunity to make changes in their room, reflecting corresponding changes in their life.
Remember the days when you went home from your job on Friday afte oon and didn't think much about it until Monday morning? Remember when reading novels was a regular part of your life? Remember when the word "unplugged" was part of your vocabulary only when you were moving a lamp to another part of the room? Remember when a proposal or a check would slowly find its way to you through the mail while we patiently waited for its arrival?

Feng Shui isn’t just about your stuff or how you place your stuff in your environment. Feng Shui begins with an awareness of what energizes and uplifts you and what depletes you. If it feels good, it’s good Feng Shui. If it feels bad, it’s bad Feng Shui. Sounds pretty simple doesn’t it? It’s always better to be around or focus on what feels good or energizes you than it is to be around something that drains and depletes you. We are profoundly affected by the environments we inhabit.
Do you have a favorite color? Has your favorite color changed over the years? I'll bet most poeple don't even consider WHY they like certain colors over others. In my blog post on emotio I talked about vibration and how everything has a vibration. Our voices are vibration, water carries vibration, even light is vibration. Colors appear to us as they do due to the light vibration which our eyes behold. Since vibration affects us in different ways then it is important to realize that COLOR can affect our bodies as well.

This year, as you go into Spring cleaning mode, bring a different awareness to it and you will accomplish even more.
Feng Shui is about understanding energy. When we understand energy we don't force it or fight it, we go with it. Whenever I follow the flow, something amazing seems to happen. Opportunities, synchronicity simply unfolds before me. To show you what I mean, I'd like to tell you about a day this July. It was a beautiful day! The sun was shining, there was a gentle breeze and the humidity was low. Fantastic for the East Coast in July.
The direction in which a person sleeps or does other prolonged activities is very important. Each person has his or her own energy, which in Feng-Shui is called a number of “Gua”, also known as your “Ming Gua”. It is easily calculated. Based on that number, people are further separated into two types: “eastern” and “western” (but this has nothing to do with hemispheres of the planet). Each person also has four favorable and four adverse directions. You can do the simplest calculations by yourself.
Think positive. Think creativity, success, wealth. Think big. One of the most important principles of feng shui involves the act of thinking (specifically, thinking about setting our intentions). Setting intentions means to use our mind to think about what we would like to manifest in this lifetime. Whether that be achieving our career goals, falling in love and starting a family, building a business, owning property, leading a creative lifestyle…all of these future dreams must first be thought out, then articulated.

"Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." ~ William Morris THE FENG SHUI BY FISHGIRL CHALLENGE William Morris was England's most famous designer / craftsman who inspired the Arts & Crafts Movement in the mid 1800's. Think about what he said: "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." Whether he knew it or not, Willam Morris was practicing Feng Shui. One of the first things we learn when studying Feng Shui is to get rid of anything that is broken or that isn't working.
There have been countless studies conducted through the years that have proved how important relationships can be to a person's life. Friendships and love relationships have the ability to make a person happier, more energetic, and more satisfied with their life and surroundings. In fact, some of these studies even suggest that good relationships are the key to a longer and healthier life. Of course, it stands to reason that if good relationships can enhance your life, problematic relationships could be a detriment.
Is there really a “secret” to achieving prosperity, money and success? Do the suggestions and ideas in books like <u>Think and Grow Rich</u>, <u>The Law of Attraction</u> and <u>The Strangest Secret</u> really work? A vast majority of the world believes you are either lucky and get all the breaks or you are destined to be one of the unfortunate ones that works twice as hard to get half as much.
An often asked question is, “Do Yin and Yang have anything to do with Feng Shui?” Or, “Can I use something other than the traditional principles of Feng Shui to bring balance and harmony into my surroundings so I can improve my life?” Others even say they would like to use Feng Shui but do not want anyone to see something in their home that does not look normal, is weird or obvious.
A lot is written at this time of the year reminding you to be grateful for what you have and thanking God or your Creator for your blessings. Yes, it is good and important to be grateful and set aside one day per year to express that gratefulness but what about the rest of the year? Most people miss the vast difference between being grateful and living a life in gratitude.

For those who practice, or want to practice, Feng Shui in their homes, this room absolutely can’t be ignored. Certain decorating strategies are necessary to ensure that this room is in acco
When you have a problem or a question that you are working through or asking yourself, use your inner knowledge to find the answers. We each have our own inner wisdom and guidance system. The key is understanding how to listen. The first step is to set aside time to quiet your mind. With kids running around, the telephone ringing or the TV blaring it isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Set aside a few minutes a day just to be alone with your thoughts.
Today started out a bit differently than most days for me. I went into the kitchen for breakfast, opened the refrigerator door and saw that the entire refrigerator was covered in red wine! Why you ask? Let me explain.
According to Mac Anderson Founder, Simple Truths, a few years ago a health study determined there are three main reasons people can't cope in life: 1. They live in the past. 2. They have a low self-esteem. 3. They can't laugh at themselves. All three of these can be important when you cannot focus and are unmotivated. Moreover, if one of them fits, you need to take appropriate action. But if you have carefully checked all three of these out and none of them fit you – then what? Pam is a very determined businessperson who works from her home office.
When it comes to good health, strong relationships and wealth, your home is the key. According to the principles of Feng Shui, the three areas that can affect your prosperity and future most are your front door, bedroom, and kitchen. This article, the third of three, will focus on your kitchen – especially your stove or burner top-- and its impact on your prosperity, vitality, health and overall abundance for your future. Your stove’s location, care and cleanliness will either increase your prosperity, well-being and abundance or stand its way.
In many homes, the kitchen is the "heart of the home." In Feng Shui the kitchen symbolizes nourishment and wealth. After all, it’s no coincidence that slang words for money include "bread" or "dough" and “to put food on the table” means to earn money. Reflecting the love and energy that are poured into process of making food, the kitchen also symbolizes nourishment. As human beings, we interpret our environment through our senses. It is reported that 70% of what we experience comes from our eyes. Our sight impacts our experiences more than any of the other senses. Basically, we pay more attention to what we see than what we hear, smell, taste or touch. To create an environment that embraces you with comfort, beauty, style and inspiration, it is vital that you choose to surround yourself with items and objects that resonate with who you are and what you like.

Whether you are one of the 77 million baby boomers reaching retirement age every seven seconds, approximately 12,000 people per day, or still part of what the government calls the non-mature workforce at 45 or under, the word retirement can create waves of anxiety, mile high piles of questions and even unrelenting fear. In today’s economy, the anxiety and fear has been magnified 100 fold when it comes to retirement. Will it be your choice to do so within your chosen time frame or will it be forced upon you whether you want to or not?
Career, just the word sends some of us into a tailspin of confusion, frustration and dismay. Is a career the same thing as a job? And is it something I even want? In Feng Shui, Career is tied to finding our true calling. Diving deep into the depths to connect to our inner knowing, that place where we know who we are and what we're supposed to be doing. Who you are isn't necessarily what you do. You are not your job. But if your job is in alignment with who you are, your job gives you the opportunity to embrace your talents, abilities and knowledge.
Fall is one of my favorite times of year. As the weather cools and the leaves change, I am faced with burgundy, red, yellow and orange where once there was only green. The kaleidoscope of color on the East coast is breathtaking – being a native Califo ia girl myself, I am always in awe of the majesty and beauty of nature this time of year. As a Feng Shui practitioner and teacher, I am reminded that Feng Shui is deeply connected to the patterns and cycles in nature. In spring, plants send out new shoots and seeds sprout new life.
If you'd like to attract more wealth and prosperity into your home or office, adding a money plant can be a great solution. You'll often find small Pachira plants for offered for sale in nurseries and through online sources. However, with care and time these plants can become quite large, often reaching a size of three feet wide and seven feet tall.

Everyone knows a well-balanced diet and exercise is good for your health, but Feng Shui can be too. If used correctly, Feng Shui can help point your health in the right direction. There are three areas - the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen - in your home that have a strong connection to your health. In all three of these rooms, you want to try to let in as much natural light as possible. Light is a strong source of energy, which will result in good Feng Shui. If you live in a home that doesn't allow for a lot of natural light, there are other ways to bring light in.
Separating home life and business is the first major challenge. When your work space is nestled within your home, the two parts of your life often collide in ways that impede your performance in both. Running a small business may be interrupted numerous times throughout the day by family members and work issues can threaten to overtake important family time. The other obstacle involves a lack of social interaction and stimulation. This lack of stimulation that is experienced
While Feng Shui may be about moving your “stuff” to a better place, sometimes the biggest object to move is yourself! Last week I was on the phone with a good friend who has followed my Feng Shui advice for at least 15 years.
Stuff, Stuff, Stuff!!! Who doesn’t have at least one thing they cant live without? Whether it be your Starbucks latte in the morning that makes you 10 minutes late for work, or those Jimmy Choo shoes on sale at Sacks that you absolutely must have, or another little black dress to add to your collection of cocktail attire, we all have at least one piece of “STUFF” that we hold onto for dear life! If you’re anything like me, you have two or more.
Kathy, a business person working out of a home office, has been talking about relocating and downsizing for months. She was so excited about her move. She did everything right, she uncluttered, packed and cleaned each room before moving on to the next. She arranged for utilities and the mail to be cancelled or moved. She didn't overlook anything, at least that is what she thought. It is now Wednesday, four days after the truck moved her furnishings from her old home to her new one - and she just got her key.
A common belief is that wealth, financial wealth, comes from outside the home, through a job or investments. It is a little known fact that wealth actually begins at home where you sleep, eat and live according to Feng Shui principles. When areas of your home are out of balance by being filled with clutter or the wrong things, wealth becomes stagnant. It doesn’t grow; instead it diminishes or completely goes away, as in the loss of a job.
Feng Shui seeks to create environments that are in balance with our individual sense of harmony and serenity. It is the practice of understanding how the energy, the feeling, in our living spaces impacts and affects the quality of our lives. Feng Shui allows us to harness and use this energy to our best advantage, improving not just the aesthetics of our spaces but also the feeling of our spaces. Feng Shui, literally translated as "wind and water", is an ancient Chinese form of environmental placement.
Feng shui is such an esoteric practice. It’s often misunderstood and categorized as hooey, hocus-pocus, or even voodoo. It’s none of those things. Still, there is a tendency in our society to put a shingle out and call ourselves experts after having read a book or two or maybe taken a seminar. So how to select a consultant? • Will you want to use a compass school method or a form school method? Have your consultant explain the merits and pitfalls of both to you. • Where or with whom did your consultant study? How many years has she or he been practicing?
It’s official. The Donald tells Carrie Prejean, “You’re fired!” for not fulfilling her duties as Miss Califo ia 20009 and now Tami Farrell is the new reigning queen. Not having been a beauty queen myself I have no idea what’s required of a job like this but for Carrie Prejean the requirements ...
As we herald in the New Year many of us take this time to reflect on the year past and to set intentions for the year to come. The use of Feng Shui can provide us with a deeper understanding and appreciation of our lives and our intentions. For many of us this is a time for resolutions and resolutions are often focused on things we don’t like: our weight, our relationships, clutter in our home, our jobs or lack thereof, and our balance between work and life, to name a few. This year I’d like to suggest that we shift our focus from New Year resolutions to New Year realignments.
Are you stuck on the procrastination highway where productivity slows to a crawl and stress uncontrollably speeds up? Why, because you’d rather be doing something else, fear of failure or lack of organization? Or are you procrastinating just because you do not know how to manage your internal productivity clock, organize your energy and focus your attention?
With so many people unemployed, the stock market still significantly down from record highs in 2008 and economists arguing about whether the recession is over or is going to get worse, it’s a wonder if anyone has a bright outlook on the future. Everyone has been touched by this economic downturn.
According to the National Association of Professional Organizations, research shows a direct correlation between productivity and clutter. When clutter and chaos are on the rise, profits and productivity decline. While the mantra of the day may be "go paperless" that doesn't mean your computer should take over your life, become electronic clutter and take control of your time while you become less efficient, effective and productive. A clutter-free desktop reduces stress and frustration while increasing concentration and creative thinking.

How to use Feng Shui to create a private sanctuary and renew your soul There are 7 key design components to incorporate in your room décor in order to soothe the mind, body and soul. In this world of change, doing what we can to help the environment is not just a good idea, or as Martha Stewart would say, “a good thing”, it’s the only thing. We are all stewards of this wonderful world we live in; making choices that support sustainability, recyclability, and minimal use of our resources is a great thing! When I began my design practice over 15 years ago, there were very few options available. If you wanted low VOC paint, it had to be special ordered (and maybe even mixed by hand!), and it came with a hefty price tag.
When many people think of the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui, they oftentimes consider only the interior of the home. But it is only befitting that your front porch and deck should be decorated using the principles of Feng Shui as well. After all, it is on the porch and deck where you head to relax and to unwind from the stresses of the daily grind, and these two areas are often the first to greet guests who come to visit. What’s more, Feng Shui experts put a great emphasis on the home’s entryway being inviting for positive energy.
I have often talked about the importance of been prepared– meaning being “business prepared–“ when beginning a new business endeavor. In that sense, utilizing Feng Shui’s principles in an office or a business location is part of being prepared to eliminate blockages in the ‘energy’ that could prevent you and your business from achieving the goals you’re setting out to accomplish.n nSome of you may already have read books on Feng

When I was first contacted on behalf of Canon Europe last fall to prepare a report on how to use Feng Shui to aid office stress, as a Feng Shui Master I was sincerely thrilled that a giant technology corporation would acknowledge such an ancient science like Feng Shui to help find a cure for such a modern problem. nnI was, however, astounded to find out that in a report released by the European agency for âSafety and Health at Workâ that stress causes 50 percent of absent

They want better service, higher-quality products and more personalization. In short, today's consumers are looking for an experience. This means businesses must sell both their tangible and intangible products and services much like Starbucks sells both drinks and its signature café environment.

As human beings, we are emotionally impacted by scent. In fact, our sense of smell is considered the only sense that evokes a purely emotional response. It is reported that our responses to smell take place within 10 seconds after exposure – with no thought process involved. We react and then think. Our olfactory sense is the oldest of the five senses.

Many times a home or office can have a tendency to accumulate negative energy over a period of time. It could be that there were some bad experiences that occurred in the space that were the cause of the lingering bad energy.
