The martial arts are both art and science. The word “art" is defined as the activity of creating beautiful things and the word “science" is defined as a methodological activity, discipline, or study". While these two definitions are correct, I prefer the contributions of an anonymous poet: “Art is a passion pursued with discipline science is a discipline pursued with passion". At their most basic level, the martial arts are nothing more than ways to prevent someone from harming or killing you.

When we think of the word addiction we often think about chemical addiction to alcohol, tobacco, or heroin. But did you know that you can be addicted to your emotions? We all know someone who is! Sometimes they are addicted to anger, depression, sadness and then there is the rare person who is always happy. What is an emotion? An emotion is a chemical response to outside stimulus. We are always having emotional response to what is going on in our environment. Sometime the emotions are weak, other times they are very strong.
The difference between a martial art and self-defense training is a huge subject. Martial arts and self-defense training are completely different, but they are absolutely the same. This is a hard concept to understand. I’m a martial arts school owner and I’m a self-defense instructor, and I completely understand the differences. But many do not. Many confuse the two. I’m going to begin by saying there have been no new techniques or moves created for thousands of years. You ha
The martial arts belt system is one of the greatest human development systems ever created, but only if it is used correctly. Success in the real world is full of obstacles. They need to be surmounted to achieve the desired goal or result. Most people quit within inches of their success! So what does the martial art belt system teach? It teaches both children and adults to set goals, attain them, and see the visual results of these achievement.
According to Dr. Lenore E. Walker, a prominent expert on battered women, a woman must experience at least two complete battering cycles before she can be labeled a “battered woman”. The cycle has three phases. First the tension-building phase, followed by the explosion or acute battering incident, then the calm, loving respite- often referred to as the honeymoon phase. Battered woman syndrome describes a set of symptoms found in woman living in battering relationships. The four general characteristics are: - The woman believe it’s her fault
When someone reaches their goal of Black Belt what really changes? They have spent the last 4 to 5 years of their lives working towards this goal, then it is suddenly here and gone. What happens next depends on the individual martial artists. If the person is a self motivated goal oriented person, they are well prepared at Black Belt with their new short and long term goals. I was always set, looking to the future for new ranks and new learning experiences. Not everyone is. For some after hitting Black Belt something happens.
Martial Arts and The BiblennAs a Christian and a martial arts student, I have often wrestled with the idea of self-defense. Does God expect me to defend my family and myself when physically attacked or am I to âturn the other cheekâ and endure it in the name of Jesus? As I considered the many comments I encountered on this topic, I became even more confused. Some advocates for âreligionâ have gone as far as to say that anyone who practices any form of martial arts is
I'm so proud of the fact that I have no ego. It truly makes me the most humble person I've ever met. Regardless of whether we admit it or not, we all have an ego. It's what we do with that ego and how we demonstrate it among our martial arts peers and students which determine how good and what type of instructor we are.... rnWith over 36 years of martial arts experience I've seen a lot of different types of martial arts and self-defense instructors. They all, including myself
I begin this by asking you two simple questions. Where are you? and what time is it? Almost everything I will write has a martial arts theme. That is because martial arts is part of who I chose to be. It is not who I am, but simply part of me. The reaso I refer so often to it is because it has been and still is a great vehicle for my understanding of life in general. Yesterday several of my students completed their level one Kyusho Jitsu exams (Black Belt). There was a year of preparation and classes to take this 3 hour written and physical exam.
Today in the martial arts there is a heavy influence on 'sport' aspects. There is no problem with this however it can often mask the real purpose of martial arts training. The lifetime study of a martial art is not about competition with others, but concurring the self. When ever I think of great masters my mind goes off to Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido and others who truly understood and embodied what the martial arts are all about. I could list literally hundreds of names, but we all know the legacy of these masters. What is high level martial arts?
If everyone on the planet were to read, understand and internalize this teaching we would see an end to violence and conflict almost over night. The mind is an amazing creation. For centuries science thought that the mind was fixed. It thought that personality was set at birth. Today science understands one of the greatest teachings of the Buddha, the teaching that the mind can be transformed. What does this mean to us? For one thing it means that the personality is not set in stone.
Humility , or being humble, is the defining characteristic of an unpretentious and modest person, someone who does not think that he or she is better or more important than others. Because the concept of humility addresses intrinsic self-worth, it is emphasized in the realm of religious practice ...
According to Professeur Salem Assli, the martial art world’s most recognizable authority on BFS, Savate is the oldest martial art to have been developed in the western hemisphere. Although less well known than its eastern counterparts such as karate, kung fu and tae kwon do, over the past 2 decades, Savate has started to gain some recognition from modern day martial artists. Savate gets its name from the French for "old shoe”, a reference to the footwear that was worn during fights.
The martial arts is rich with the teaching of the Buddha, the teaching of the movement of the octagon is no exception. What is the origin of the Octagon in martial arts training? It's movement is based on the teaching of the 8 Fold Path. If you follow this path you will live a happy life, likewise if you understand movement in the Octagon you will be safe from your attacker. The 8 paths are grouped into 3 headings. Wisdom 1. Right View - The 1st part of the path conce s "Right View". Does a person go though his or her life with the right view of life in mind?
The Theory of Assumed Morality When we encounter another person who has become "removed from normal", we can easily fall into thinking or assuming that they are a moral person. Whether because of denial, fear, or naiveté, we place on them our own label of morality. This is what I call assumed morality. "They have to be a good person because I'm a good person. They won't hurt me. They won't kill me. I'm a good person, I was raised correctly, and deep down inside I know that v
A healthy relationship is built on mutual respect. This is true of all types of relationships; your family, you friends and your co-workers. You can't choose your family or, in most cases your co-workers, so you hopefully learn to get along with them. Your friends you can choose. You can choose to accept their short comings as they choose to accept yours- yes, you have some.

The series of questions hopefully will stimulate students to carefully investigate the schools they intend to join, define classical Kung Fu and help differentiate between exte al and internal systems. Developing fight skills is the crudest pursuit of the martial arts. That is just one area of the entire spectrum of 'Low Tech Combat'. There are many other, much more beneficial attributes a serious martial artist needs to develop. The following 13 things a martial artist needs to know are areas a serious practitioner needs to look at and fill holes in his/her arsenal. 1. The first priority should be to learn how to defend yourself against an unskilled attacker as that is t

Intuition -- Survival Signals Intuition: direct perception of truth, fact, independent of any reasoning process; or immediate apprehension, a keen quick insight. In our western society intuition has many times gotten a bad rap. Talked about in a negative way mainly referring to "women's intuition" as a mystical or ridiculous thing that had no logic. In eastern culture intuition is and has been respected for centuries.
What do you think defines failure in martial arts? Is it getting beaten in a sparring match? Or not breaking the board in your belt test? rnOr forgetting your patterns in a competition?rn rnI don't think so.rn rnWhen you are on the martial arts path of self-improvement none of these things are failures. It has been said and written that Tai Chi is a "way of life". Here's a hurdle you might face somewhere around blue or red belt. You might hear a little voice in your head saying something like this.  "I'm bored! I've done low block. I know these patterns. Why do I have to do this again? What's the point? They're not teaching me anything any more. I'm not learning anything new!"rn rnAt this point you have to trust. Has it not intrigued you that some martial artists that have been deemed as masters, who are often depicted as fragile old men with a farmers attire and a life long grown beard, rarely move from where they stand yet magically throw down a handful of baddies that seem to have had an overdose in steroids and caffeine? Or that a slender female stands amidst insurmountable foes and yet ends up being the last one standing? Is it fact? Or is it fiction? The answer that you must be
Without a doubt the most crucial phase of a fight whether Mixed Martial (MMA), Muay Thai or self defense is moving from the out of range distance to where we engage the opponent whether offensively or defensively commonly known as "Bridging the Gap". This transitional phase is also a part of many MMA fighter's games that is often not well developed, most relying on speed in their offense of stand up combinations and take down shooting techniques, or on a sprawling and smother
Your relationship with your instructor might not always be easy as you travel along the martial arts road. rn rnIt usually starts off fine. After all you chose someone you like and trust...right? This is one of my favorite stories about the Buddha’s travels in India. I hope you like it. In the countryside of India the Buddha is giving a talk on Dharma. Whenever the Buddha talks people gather from all around to listen to his wisdom. On this particular occasion there is a heckler in the crowd. As Buddha talks the heckler is always interrupting, trying to get a rise of anger from the Buddha. Over time the man become more and more abusive. Finally after a long period the Buddha addresses the heckler.
People study martial arts for all different reasons. Some study martial arts for the health benefits and improved balance. Others choose to practice karate, tae kwon do, or ju jitsu as a sport or recreational activity. But some people want to learn martial arts for self defense purposes. The answer to the question of what is the best martial art for self defense is not set in stone. All martial arts training will help with fundamentals such as balance and flexibility and impr
There is a selection process when a bad guy is picking you. If the attacker is someone you already know, there is a different selection process. But we’re going to talk here about random selection. Let’s just say the individual who is going to attack you does not currently know you. There is a major selection process, and it’s called “Opportunity.” I’m going to dip into the animal kingdom for an example. We’ve all watched Animal Planet or Discovery Channel or what have you.
Todays world is filled with violence and adversity. Many people feel that through violence and suppression, our enemies will be broken and eliminated. Instead of showing love and compassion to our fellow man, we show our muscle (nuclear arms, weapons of war and weapons of the street) and refuse to truly sit and talk to each other. The question of humanity is, when will we learn to harmonize with one another and stop the eternal fighting. When will we learn to blend with natur
Since our school was founded in March 2000, I have promoted approximately 120 people to the rank of Black Belt, either adult or junior. Many of these people moved on to other things shortly after this promotion. Our currently Black Belt population is about 75 with another 22 eligible this fall. Now I am not giving these number to brag about how many Black Belt I have, but to ask the question, how many of you are TRUE Black Belts? Most of the Black Belts in my system are excellent students of the art, but is this transferring to the real world?

We are truly our own worse enemy. Why is it when something goes wrong we are so fast to turn on ourselves and start the worry process? People are motivated by two things. The need to avoid pain and the need to experience pleasure, yet we focus so much on pain. What causes man to suffer? First there is physical suffering, the kind that come with injury, disease and age. The second is mental suffering, which is imposed on us by ourselves.
A Brief History of Filipino Martial Arts If there’s one area of martial art that’s cloaked in mystery and controversy, it’s the Filipino martial arts. From the outset, there’s conflicting theories over what they should be called. Some people are of the opinion that A is (or A is de Mano) is the correct name. Others insist that Eskrima is correct. Still others insist on using the term Kali.
This event is the second of two of the most terrifying in my life. Like one of the other attempts on my life i've spoke here about, i've never spoke in 'public' about this before either. Without a doubt i'm emotionally damged by this still. In a strange way, maybe more than when that four man gang came to see me. This event occured a bit more recently, and was the last major event i experienced at the hands of terrorists. As far as i'm aware, i've still got serious problems in some places in my home country.
'Combatives' is a generalization of a collective grouping of principles & techniques, that should always be simple. Primarily a concept based model, techniques are secondary. Within those sentences, are the heart of the combative approach. Generalizationr
When attending one of the many karate for beginners classes available, one of the first karate moves taught is Chokuzuki or straight punch. The punch is practiced from heiko-dachi (natural stance), feet roughly shoulder width apart, toes facing forward, shoulders relaxed, crown of the head pushing up, stomach pushing down and chin pulled in. The weight should be evenly distributed over both legs. Try not to put the weight on the heels, instead the weight should be on the bal
Judo techniques can be divided into one of three categories, These categories are: nage-waza (throwing Judo techniques), katame-waza (grappling Judo techniques), and atemi-waza (striking Judo techniques). What we think and feel has a direct impact on our current and future health and life. For a lot of people stress or anxiety from their daily experiences, such as financial difficulties or family issues, can be the cause of insomnia, as well as other mental health problems. Mental and physical tension can cause unease and you may find that when you attempt to sleep, your mind races and your body feels restless. Many people find it difficult to let go of worrying or troubling
There is a high profile sexual assault case going on in our Province right now. It involves the kidnapping and sexual assault of a teen girl by a man posing as a police officer. The young person was pulled over by an individual who appeared to be wearing an RCMP uniform, with grill lights on his car. She was informed that her vehicles tags were expired and was instructed to get into the back of the car. Believing he was a police officer she complied. Once in the car, she was taken to a secondary location and repeatedly sexually assaulted. Much later she was released by her abductor.

This article is very hard for me to write. It conce s one of the two most terrifying moments in my life. That even now, some 9 years later, i still can feel the mental scars. Writing this, adrenaline is running through me, and i'm becoming very emotional. I've only told this event to my closest of friends, and my family. i've never used this in an advisory, teaching format specifically before, although my teaching is without a doubt based on such personal events. If in this, i come across in a way that seems out of character for a self defence Instructor, it's cause i'm just human.
Capoeira is an extremely poetic sport and is hardly jock-ish in any sense. In fact, it marries the best of both worlds, making it the ideal sport for both sexes. It has the grace of a dance yet the amazing cardio weight-loss abilities of martial arts without the necessary violence. A rich tough history like any other respectable sport yet retaining its exoticism by being a martial art that avoids the fight totally. However, as with everything exotic, the concept of the martia
I don’t mean any disrespect to fellow martial artists, instructors, promoters, agents and etc., but I think the brain washing should come to a complete stop. Each time I hear fellow martial artists define karate as a fighting art; I want to just scream to the top of my voice in wailing ...
Warrior’s Dance is a powerful marriage of martial arts and dance. Traditional martial arts systems have evolved historically as warriors and spiritual seekers have experimented with and experienced the effects of various ways of moving. These systems originated as inspired students were moved by and connected with a sense of power seemingly related to a certain source of our consciously incomprehensible universe. Perhaps no one is able to transmit such a sense of connection to another, as it is so very personal in nature.

The systematized or arranged varying systems for combat are known as the martial arts . Even with all the different forms and styles, the purpose is the same: to physically defeat an opponent and defend against potential threats. An interesting fact: The word martial comes from the word Mars, and Mars is the Roman God of War. Fighting, war, and hunting was a part of every personsâ life in the ancient times. Hence, in every civilization, there were different versions of mart
BMW initially began building motorcycle engines; and then complete motorcycles. Its motorcycle division is now known as BMW Motorbike. The bikes had a "Boxer" twin engine, in which an ICCE cylinder protrudes into the air-flow from each side of the machine. Apart from their singles (basically the same pattern), all their motorcycles had used this distinctive layout until the early 1980s. Many BMWs are still produced using this pattern, which is designated the R Series.nThe K S
One of the things that we talk about in our school is reaching your FULLEST potential. Parents bring their children to us, in hope that martial arts will help their child reach this peak. What is your FULL Potential? The human mind is an amazing thing. Scientist say that we only use 5-10% of our brain. Then we have people that are predominately right brained (creative) or left brained (logical). What does all this mean?
The Night of the Long Knives Some of you who know me personally from my home area, will know that throughout my life as a 'career idiot', i was involved in knife violence, including being stabed in the chest & back myself. One such incident stands out among the rest, both in terms of frenzy, injuries, and taking 'responsibility' by all people involved. For various reasons there won't be a detailed journey of events, suffice to say it's important to set the appropriate scenario.
As with any self defense instructor would tell you, if you can run away from a violent encounter then do so. But it may come to a point you will need to apply the lessons and self defense moves that I will share with you. However, you first need to prepare yourself. rnFirst of all, you have to be vigilant. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when you are out walking alone on the streets. It is crucial to be aware of your surroundings, and you must have do three t
"Anger is like picking up a hot coal with the intent of throwing at someone else. You are always the one who gets burned.". Buddha Anger and violence are endemic in our society today. It is estimated that the rate of violent crimes and assaults is four times higher than it was in the 1960's. What would account for this four fold increase? The counter argument is that murder rates have steadily been dropping over the last 10 years. Don't kid yourself, this has nothing to do with a decrease in violent crime.
Unscrupulous Qigong teachers can be dangerous to your wealth, health, intellect and spirit. Two examples of people donating large sums of money to organizations will be given. There are many other examples. The danger of these con men is their charm. They pretend to be your best friend, care about your welfare and “feel your pain”. Many victims, even after they know that they have been taken, still adore these con artists. One well-known guru was driven around in a Rolls Ro
To better understand gangs one must first attempt to understand the reasons why people become involved with them. To ignore this crucial first step is to immediately begin to travel down the path of ignorance, leading ultimately to the want (however justifiable it may be) to forms of summary and (more) extreme punative justice. The problem being, that whilst this will salve the genuine hurt of those innocently affected, in itself it will do little to prevent a recurrence of crime by the offender upon release from the CJS.
This article is an excerpt from an essay I wrote a while back (2004), but it's worth another look! Enjoy! Ask yourself: “Why am I learning karate?” Some people come to the dojo to learn self-defense. Others come to relieve stress, get in better shape, learn a new art form, or meet ...
Some individuals may think that learning Mixed Martial Arts is one way of going to learn self-defense. In fact, this is can be true but it does not necessarily mean that you actually need to undergo years of training to be able to defend yourself against wrong people. You could use varied weapons like a taser, stun gun, pepper spray and others for self-defense. Thus, the concept of having to spend several years of martial arts training is not necessarily true. Well, you could
Self defense products have now become a must have for a household; crime is going through the roof and every second a burglary/or a theft is reported. It's an alarming situation out there and without a self defense weapon in your hand, there is hardly any other way that you can save yourself from this looming threat. It's been seen that a majority of people do not give self defense products much value . For most of the people having a stun gun or pepper sprays is a sheer wast
We live in buildings for highly specific reasons. Safety. Security. Health. All these are top of the pile. Humans will enter buildings that are not theirs for specific reasons also. Benignly it may be to shop, or perhaps to visit friends or relatives. In both shops and homes there will be possessions. Owned by the shop or the householder.
Many women live alone these days, in apartments, condos and their own homes. We have as much right to live as we please as any man. We shouldn’t have to live any differently or take any special precautions, but, unfortunately, we should. Self defense for women living alone is a set of habits that can help keep us safe by creating the illusion that we don’t live alone and avoidance tactics that make us difficult targets.
If you listen to the news or read a paper there is so much negativity is can be overwhelming. Now from a business standpoint bad news sells, so this is what we get. I am however more interested in the thinking that causes this versus the situations themselves. The first line of our Student Creed states. “I develop myself physically and mentally based on the martial art spirit.” A martial art student trains the body to develop the mind, yet so many students of the arts are often so negative.

Combatives is a loose term indicating a collection of actions that tend to deal mostly with the conflict phase of an engagement. The whole purpose of combatives is to teach you in the shortest time possible how to realistically protect yourself. It must be simple, else it isn't combatives.
Do your cardio in the Morning Scientific studies show doing aerobic exercises first thing in the morning is more effective for burning fat than aerobic exercise later in the day. You see, after an overnight fast (not eating while you sleep), blood sugar levels are low. Always remember that breakfast is still the most important meal of the day. This doesnt mean not to work out later in the day but if you can break a sweat in the morning. Dont Starve Yourself Reducing your calo

A Brief History of Muay Thai According to Aja Surachai Sirisute, the pioneer of Muay Thai in the United States, Muay Thai literally means Thai Boxing. The art is also referred to as The Art of Eight Limbs or the Art of Eight Weapons. This is a reference to Muay Thai’s predominant use of the hands, legs (shins), elbows and knees in combat. A descendant of the older forms, Lerd Rit and Muay Boran, modern Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand.
As someone with a lot of responsibilities, It is hard to find time to schedule a workout program that would fit my schedule. There are lot of things about daylight burglaries, murders, assaults, that you get to read in the newspapers, or online on various top news sites like ABCNews, CBS News, CNN.com, etc. Most of the TV channels also blurt out the same information, that sounds unpleasant but after sometimes we just forget it and start doing things that we often do, i.e switching on our favorite sports channel, and seeing our top basketball players dueling out in the field; or feasting on our favo

The contemporary world poses various threats to women. From being subjected to domestic violence and sexual abuse at home to being catcalled on streets and physically abused in congested public transportation, women's safety is always at risk. Women are incapable of doing night shifts at work for this very cause. Even at work, women are prone to sexual misconduct. The famous 'Me too' movement was an outcome of sexual harassment at the workplace. Although the action brought in
2600 years ago the Buddha taught many truths that still hold truth to this day. Often times throughout history attempts have been made to stifle these teachings. Here is one of the most important, which I will attempt to put into such a language as to be understood by any and all readers. The 4 Nobel Truths: 1. "The noble truth that there is suffering" 2. "The noble truth that there is a cause of suffering" 3. "The noble truth that is there can be an end of suffering" 4.

This month I want to talk about Internet Safety. Most of us go through our lives using the Internet for work, pleasure, and interpersonal connection. We surf, crawl, chat, utilize Social Networking and enjoy almost instantaneous access to information and multi-media. We don’t generally think about the fact that the Internet is perhaps one of the last largely ungove ed places left on the planet. I defy anyone to say that the Internet is a “Safe” place.
