It has happened to all of us at one time or another: our child does "one of those things" that absolutely drives us crazy, and we wonder why? Perhaps it was to stand at the head of the class on that first day of school and blatantly challenge the teacher. Perhaps we struggled in the kitchen for two hours preparing his favorite food only to get a reaction of crying at the table. We stand back puzzled and wonder if there is something wrong with our child. When we discuss this with other parents we discover that they too share this dilemma.
The recent violence at a football game in Sarasota caused me to reflect, once again, on violence in sports and what can be done to remedy this problem. It is conceivable that we may see more violence on the field as frustration with the economy grows and the financial rewards which athletics become more appealing and more important to many Americans. Violence in many sports has received a lot of media attention. Brawls in baseball games and players and fans acting in disorderly manners in sporting arenas are quite commonplace today.
Ehrenfried Pfeiffer’s asked Rudolf Steiner why people today appear unable to develop and act according to all they learn and seem to know. Steiner replied: “This is a problem of nutrition.” In Waldorf schools worldwide, there is a conscious effort to keep school snacks and meals as natural as possible. Most schools have a garden and encourage the growing of vegetable and the grinding of grain. Salads, fruits, nuts and simple soups are the staple of most schools. Rudolf Steiner gave many indications regarding the plant and animal kingdoms and proper nutrition for adults and children.
Rudolf Steiner saw man primarily as a fourfold being. To understand this concept we need to consider Steiner’s views on the human being in relation to the kingdoms of nature: Firstly consider the mineral kingdom. It is dead, inanimate – a stone does not move unless an exte al force is applied to it. It is physical structure only, without life of its own. Steiner called this the “physical body”. In the human body the skeleton is the most mineralized, “stone-like” part and can be likened to the mineral kingdom.
Recently, during a coaching session with an executive (whom we’ll call Jodie), I listened as she described conversations with her staff. The feedback that her staff gave her went something like this: “You’re hard to communicate with.” “I don’t feel empowered when you speak to me.” “You sound impatient when you speak to me.” “You make me feel stupid.” Does this scenario sound familiar to you? Do you often feel helpless when it comes to communicating with your staff? What are you to do with this type of feedback?
I spoke to 3 different chiropractors about my skiing mishap, my uneven body weight distribution (right side was heavier by a few pounds as revealed at a Total Health expo), and about top performance health and long life. I experienced three different levels of chiropractic adjustments, from very strong and physical, through gentle, to purely emotional and spiritual. With the last one, I've seen people crying and laughing at the same time as deeply set emotions were released free.
One of the great things about being a parent is the fun you can have teaching your kids about what you know and enjoy. I love tennis, golf, photography photography, racquetball, fishing, swimming and chess. Like many fathers, when I became a dad, I was eager to share some of these interests with the kids. Since I have coached hundreds of athletes from a wide range of sports, written articles on sport psychology and conducted seminars on improving one’s performance in sports, I could not wait until my kids got old enough for me to “impart some of my wisdom” to my offspring.
Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Anthroposophy, once gave a lecture on the merits of vegetarianism to a small group of people. From the expression on their faces he could see that they had not understood the real essence of his words. At the end of the lecture he said he was going to have dinner at a particular restaurant and those who wished could join him. Most of them went along. At the restaurant Steiner ordered for himself a “schnitzel” (cutlet of meat.). The others were aghast and expressed their astonishment, just as he expected.
Over the years, I have counseled many females who compete in figure skating, cheerleading and gymnastics at very high levels. These sports can be quite demanding, since they are different from many other sports. Consequently, these sports can place a great deal of stress on the young athletes. First, unlike a sport like tennis or golf, one tiny error can ruin an entire performance as well as years of training. Second, there are often significant interpersonal conflicts between the athlete, the parent and the coach.
The field of positive psychology (which partners closely with the fields of neurology, biochemistry, eastern medicine and others) is built on the scientific premise of neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to change. This means that greater levels of happiness are attainable through practices that change how your brain functions.
Fairy tales have an enormous and irreplaceable value in the life of a child. They educate, support and liberate the emotions of children. Fairy tales provide a unique way for children to come to terms with the dilemmas of their inner lives. The prince, the tailor, the miller, snow white – all of these are images of different elements of our own nature. It is this resonance which endears these figures to us. There is a wisdom in these characters which runs much deeper than allegory or what can be found is psychoanalysis.
People who perform in front of audiences can have very special challenges. For some, it’s just a few jitters but for others, stage fright can be debilitating – or at least harrowing. There is plenty to worry about: dry mouth and shaking hands to begin with. And what about that difficult passage, what about forgetting entire passages, what about hitting the high notes? And what happens if we have to deal with all of these worries in the context of an important audition or if we’re playing or singing before musicians with intimidating credentials?
Since I am very interested in human potential and in personal growth, some time ago, I attended a motivational lecture given by George Foreman, the former heavyweight champion of the world. Many years ago, I wrote a few articles about George Foreman’s fight with Muhammad Ali, so I was quite curious to hear what he had to say in his inspirational talk.
As an executive coach, I’ve seen all kinds of leadership styles. Effective leadership is essential to every organisation—big or small, young or old. We know from Harvard’s research on the Service-Profit-Chain and our Scores on the Board system(tm), that employee satisfaction brings revenue--when your employees are happy, your customers are happy, and that means more revenue for your business. But the message is often lost when time and resources are limited, many leaders fall under the pressure to make ends meet.
Derek Jeter recently got his 3,000 hit and he accomplished this milestone in very dramatic fashion. There are a lot of things for baseball fans to love about the shortstop for The New York Yankees-Derek Jeter. But what really makes him so special? He is a clutch hitter and a steady fielder. He has accumulated some fantastic statistics and he has been a remarkable performer in post-season play. He has delivered tons of key hits in some very big games. The Yankee captain will undoubtedly make it to The Baseball Hall Of Fame on his first opportunity.
Kytka and her mother, Anna, have always had a good relationship, but after the birth of Kytka’s first child, they began to slowly drift apart. Kytka became very interested in health, diet, natural home birth, midwifery, breastfeeding, parenting and hygienic lifestyle. The information she found was very different in the way she herself had been raised and Anna followed a more conventional diet and showed much disapproval and concern.
On the regular basis, the mainstream medicine to diagnose and treat medical ailments and acute illnesses is the way to go. All the various scientific studies, quality control, rigorous standards, and widely tested effectiveness makes the conventional medicine a logical and safe choice. However, in addition to the regular scientific ways, I am fascinated by the complementary alte ative medicine and treatments as a way to enhance the self-healing power of the body. I have personally experienced the healing power of various pressure point and energetic therapies.
With the beginning of Quarter Two and temperatures rising, the professional business world is picking up the pace just as fast. My business world is no different, but I know that one powerful way to stay effective and creative is to keep exercising regularly at least 4 times per week. I made a commitment to myself that I will be in the gym 5-6 times per week. I am already witnessing a boost in my daily productivity and overall well-being.
Before we begin our success journey - we have to define our Ultimate Vision and our Ultimate Purpose for what we want. Unless we are clear about the two, it will be a very difficult task to live our dreams and achieve our vision. For a vision to be powerful, it needs to have a purpose... Once you are clear about your vision, you determine how to implement it. Then, you begin a journey to achieve, bringing in mentors and other resources all aligned to reach the single vision you have put forward. But to persistently work on your vision, you need to have an equally powerful Purpose.
Stop trying to be normal. It undermines your success and keeps you in a state of mediocrity. It's an interesting phenomenon. This idea of being "normal" starts to take hold in high school. There begins to form this desire to "fit in" - to be part of a group. Or at least, not be singled out as someone who "doesn't fit in". Along with that comes the desire to be an "insider".
A Waldorf kindergarten is an extension of the family experience, an intermediate step for the child between the home and formal schooling. The goal is to provide a warm, calm, secure, aesthetic environment in which the imagination and creativity of the child will flourish.
In 2008, I researched the effect my appearance had on how people view me and how they treat me. I recognized the impact the appearance can have on anyone’s daily life, and I wanted to figure out ways to improve it. The reality is people judge you in the first few seconds of meeting you. If you don’t have the image you want, you won’t feel good about yourself and others won’t recognize your qualities either. Someone who’s polished tends to come across as attractive and trustworthy, while someone that doesn’t look sophisticated will be perceived the opposite way.
We are approaching the World Series, so baseball is on the minds of many Americans right now. And baseball fans and sports pundits like to debate the issue of who is the best hitter of all time. And it is hard to compare hitters from different baseball eras. However, my colleague, pal and the coauthor of one of my books, Who Will Win The Big Game, has recently collected some interesting data on this topic. In this book Carlton and I tried to identify the fifty characteristics of winning teams, players and coaches based on statistics and psychology.
Root Cause of Stress Stress is due to uncertainty (about future or about way to proceed), which comes from lack of clarity on current situation. It can be financial or work related, it can be about big business decisions, it may be due to poor communication with people or a misunderstanding with a partner, or emotional such us lack of relationship and/or love.
Rule 1: Say what you want (not what you don’t want) This is probably the most important rule of NLP. It is very important to remember that EVERYTHING that we say, think or do has an impact on our unconscious mind. It is our goal as NLP practitioners to continually programme our minds with what we want rather than what we don’t want. Here is a prime example of this.r
A great way to grow your business is by providing a good, relevant bonus to a book launch in your niche. Why a WIN - WIN - WIN? Three immediate reasons come to mind:
Most companies take a good approach to developing leaders, but generally miss the point. There's a lot of emphasis placed on good decision making, effective communication, and team building. And all those are important, but don't address what matters most. When you get right down to it, the essence of leadership - the thing that best reflects good leadership - is when a leader is able to bring out the best in others. If a leader is able to elicit excellence from the people around him or her, then that person can truly be deemed great leader.
What does it mean to live in a person’s strength zone? Every day millions of people go to work and participate in tasks that have very little meaning or value to them personally. They struggle with the monotony of working in a job or position that does not fulfill them. When I often train or teach leadership in business or organizatio I often witness management spending large sums of money training people in their area of weakness. The truth is there is no such thing as a “well rounded person.”
True health is harmony between the individual (body, mind, heart and soul) and his or her environment. - unknown Your personal health care is the most important thing as it is the best long-term investment you can do for yourself. Watching children participate in sports can be a wonderful experience for youngsters and for their parents. Some kids really love having their family members at their sporting events. And some moms and dads love coaching their kids in sports like baseball, soccer, basketball and football. Parents often feel good about themselves for “making it to all of their kid’s games.” And parents do deserve credit for their willingness to adjust their busy schedules to get to their children’s events. Also, there is no question that sports can really be a wonderful way for a parentr
When undertaking a new venture, there’s a simple but powerful tool that will help you achieve several worthwhile goals: • Assess new possible projects • Improve the design of the way forward • Enhance confidence in producing successful outcomes Whether you are embarking on a project of your own or assisting clients in their own projects, ask these three questions: What’s the best that could happen? What’s the worst that could happen? What will probably happen?
How did I do it I struggled to attain the ideal weight all my life, but once I focused on this goal the results came quickly and consistently. I want this article to be the inspiration, motivation and a practical resource to help you achieve your weight goals and live a happier and healthier life. There are many causes of weight gain including family history, emotional issues or stress, and unhealthy life style. I went through the entire process in stages i.e. talked with my mother about childhood weight, evaluated my diet and habits, and started an exercise regime.
The words “Peak Performance” tend to conjure up a vision of momentary flashes of brilliance. Extraordinary performances, like the 517 yard, hole-in-one, shot by golfer Mike Crean at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver, in 2002. Such performances as this are like flashes of lightning; rare, beautiful and hard to ignore. There is no doubt this is peak performance, but is a consistent level of peak performance possible as well?
Pursuit of Performance It took me four months of working out and committing myself to a strict plan to get the body I always wanted. I combined working out and eating a balanced diet to reach my goals and have never felt better! The healthy and nutritious diet for my new body is like putting Premium gas into Ferrari Enzo – maximum performance and a priceless feeling!
The idea of expecting excellence isn't new, nor is the premise that every leader should expect excellence from his or her team. But just like everything a leader says and does, it's not so much a matter of "what" he or she does as much as it is about "how" they do what they do.

I talk about Golf because that's what I am but golf relates so much to lots of life. To get better you must be better. It doesn't just happen by itself. Don't bother setting goals. It's a waste of time. Let me explain why I feel this way about goals and then offer a better alte ative. See if this scenario sounds familiar. You decide to work towards some new level of accomplishment. So you set a goal for yourself. Actually, you probably set a few goals. The first goal you set is for the end result. Your goal might be to reach a certain level of sales, or to drop X pounds, or to build a sales team of a certain size. You get the idea... Next, you set an activity goal. No... more like 2 or even 3 activity goals.
When working online there are land sharks that are as dangerous to you as the mammals found in the ocean. To whom or what I refer is not those you actually 'work' with but rather those with whom you may associate. In particular I'm referring to any negative people you may have in your life. You know the ones! They seem to have a negative attitude about everything, including your efforts to build an online business. These are the type of people that can deflate your spirits in

Do you have a picture in your mind of how you think your life should be? When chaos seems to seize the upper hand, we tend to have conversations with ourselves—conversations that, in truth, have no bearing on reality. See if you can hear yourself in any of these: • Things should always go as planned. In other words, nothing should ever go wrong. If only things went as planned, my time-management system would work perfectly and everything would be just fine.
What does it take to have a radical shift in your mindset, one that will propel you to the next level? I have three key factors that I have found always come into play. One: Mindsetr Two: Attituder Three: The Knowing Your mindset is a key factor to your success. If you believe, you shall achieve - and that is so true. Our thoughts do create our reality so t5he daily conscious training of your mind is essential. Your attitude is what keeps you in the proper mindset.
To be more fearless and confident in difficult or dangerous situations, you have to learn personal safety skills. You need to be knowledgeable about what resources to access in emergencies, and you should know how to assess and confront danger both physically and mentally.
"Sow an act...reap a habit; Sow a habit...reap a character; Sow a character...reap a destiny." We all have habits. We try to kick and break our bad ones, and form and reinforce those that are good. We have habitual ways of eating. Ever try to eat using your non-dominant hand? We have habitual ways of driving. Ever start driving to work on your day off before you realized you were supposed to be going someplace else? We use words in a habitual way, we make decisions in a habitual way, and we have habits that affect when we eat, go to bed, and get up.
Much of success is about performance. It’s about what we do and what we are able to inspire others to do. There are some simple performance principles I have learned in my life, and I want to share them with you. They really bring success, and what it takes to be successful, into sharp focus. They are also the basis for developing and maintaining an expectation of success. The Five Principles of Performance 1. We generally get from ourselves and others what we expect. It is
Removing stress in a team is just one way of helping people to become their best and reach their potential. Very often stress is misunderstood or the causes of stress maybe misdiagnosed. In this article I describe one of the most common causes of stress that very often people fail to identify: themselves. Introduction
So here he was, stuck in the office instead of watching his son play hockey. Meanwhile, Steve was out playing street hockey for three hours a day with his kids. What weighed more on Pete’s brain was that street hockey used to be the love of his life now, it was just a nuisance. Although he’d ...
For many individuals it is a life long quest to achieve financial security, career and business success. As a Senior Vice President for a Fortune 500 Firm and a business coach, I have worked with, guided and mentored hundreds of business leaders. What has shocked me the most over the years has been witnessing how mindset affects business results. It seems counter intuitive that something so intangible and allusive could be the determining factor in success and yet it is the profound driving factor.
After hearing complaints about how slow he was in getting dressed in the morning to go to work, Jed decided to examine his routine. He learned that it took at least an hour for him to shave, shower, and get dressed. If he could invest just 15 minutes less every morning, he would generate more than 90 hours a year to invest elsewhere. That represents nearly two workweeks for most of us!
For this week's Monday Morning Mini-Motivation Meetings, I chose the topic "Spontaneity and Trusting Your Instincts." To walk the talk, I did not plan an agenda, but trusted the likelihood that interesting things to say about planning, spontaneity and trusting your instincts would arise. Such as: a) Planning and preparation is important and provides confidence in business. It's always preferred to "winging it."
I’ve coined a new phrase and philosophy called “Living Life to the Nines.” Doesn’t that conjure up all sorts of positive connotations? We’ve all heard the phrase “dressed to the nines,” which means being dressed extraordinarily well. How about “cloud nine” – that blissfully happy place on top of the world?
Reason One common reason is the desire to change things, because you are less than thrilled about the way things are. You may want to change or improve your health and fitness, your social life, your career or business, your financial situation, or find your own meaning in life.
Through several exercises and mental toughness training, any athlete would be able to reach his or her true potential. There are various types of mental training techniques that are applicable for athletes. Through rigorous mental training, any athlete would be able to keep themselves in total control while competing - even in the most nerve-jangling, high pressured environment. I was with my mentor today and we were talking about his time in management and he was relaying a story to me that left me stuck for words. In fact the message was so basic that I may have disregarded it completely.
According to the late Walter Hailey, a behavioral scientist and sales and marketing consultant, “People have 12,367 thoughts per day. Of those, 90 percent are automatic, and 84 percent are negative.” More than 12,000 thoughts! That’s a lot of self-talking going on. How do you think that might affect your environment, especially if most of your thoughts are negative? The key is to manage your self-talk. Infuse it with positivity and confidence.r
Last week in a session with a client, a Division I basketball coach, we spent time talking about what she was doing on behalf of herself and her team to incorporate new tools to support a successful season. The list was long -- and wide. It included support across mental, physical, emotional, and skill-specific areas.
There are many aspects to leadership that parallel the philosophies, concepts, and perspectives of Zen Buddhism. I don't profess to have a great depth of knowledge regarding Zen Buddhism, but from the insights I do have, I can see the application with respect to effective leadership. The parallel exists within the concept of leading without leading. It exists in the ebb and flow of leadership style. And it's reflected in the very duality of the role of a leader within an organization. Let me share my perspectives on each of those concepts as an insight into effective leadership.r
Is there something more powerful than brain power, when it comes to making your business work? So often, people are raised to think their way through most situations, with the implication that we should stop feeling so much and use our heads more. I love to read and ponder what the great philosophers like Socrates, Plato, Nietzsche have to say about the truth of the human condition. But we're forgetting one of the most fundamental truths: We have to have our hearts and our brains in literal harmony to be our most powerful and productive (and human) selves.
In our own life experience, we have discovered this to be the ultimate truth. Life is not meant to be difficult, wrought with illness and pain, sorrow and suffering. Life is meant to be fruitful and joyous, in a word, heaven. The universe provides such a full abundance for all, all we need do is tap into this powerful stream of love and light energy. The choices we make each and every day dictate whether we will live a happy, abundant life or a difficult, painful life. We have all been granted the gift of being and it is our choice to decide WHO it is we want to be. All that we arer
Think of this expression for one moment: “you should take more responsibility for your work!” If you are like me, this may be an expression that you have used in the past to express your frustration at the paltry efforts of your subordinates, employees or teammates. But let’s think about it for a moment – is responsibility something tangible that somebody can literally pick up and put in a wheelbarrow? Obviously not; so what can we do to help our colleagues raise their game by taking more responsibility? A Definition
If I may ask you: How much do you enjoy living your life? How enthusiastic are you about waking up each morning to see a new day. When you are enthusiastic, you are positive and that makes you stay motivated and happy no matter the circumstance that comes your way. The happiness we are talking about is not the one that comes when you get promoted at workplace, when a baby is born or better still when you win a lottery. It is also not about those moments when we feel the feeli

Eliciting excellence in others is the essence of leadership, and one of the most effective means of eliciting excellence is to instill a sense of pride in those around us. Instilling pride has a myriad of benefits - quality of work and workmanship improves, creativity and innovation increases, collaboration is facilitated more easily, and people are willing to "go the extra mile" to do their best. A team or department instilled with a sense of pride will excel simply to prove to others that things can be accomplished that are otherwise thought impossible.
There is a myth about strengths and weaknesses, one which states that we all naturally possess them. In reality, we don’t. What we do possess are natural talents and non-talents, but these are not the same as strengths and weaknesses. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those that thinks it is ...
In this week's blog I'd like to focus on how commitment strengthens deadlines and how deadlines can strengthen your commitment. Today most of us have one of the least favorite deadlines of the year. It's tax day. Like most people, I really don't enjoy doing the work that comes with filing my tax return. Still, every year I start early, I break the task down into segments, spread those segments out over several weeks, and this year I got everything done early Friday morning.
I kicked off the first session of a series of teleseminars I call “Monday Morning Mini-Motivational Meetings,” or M5 for short. The purpose of M5 is to spend 15 minutes – no more, no less – getting people excited and amped up for the week so they can be more productive, positive, and focused in their work. At 11:30 am, I had my notes and a theme, and I was ready to go. It’s not the most complicated format, but in spite of this I entered this first call with a certain amount of trepidation.
Turning Lemons into Lemonade: or How to Return to a State of Sustainable Confidence In January, I went on vacation with my wife and our two sons, who are 10 and 14. We had hoped to enjoy the warm, sunny, southern Califo ia weather, but as you may have seen in the news, it rained like CRAZY! Our activity plans had to be adjusted, but we decided as a family to wake up every day and, after a brief moan and groan about the forecast, we declared that we would have the best vacation ever. Many good things followed.
There is tremendous opportunity and satisfaction as a leader in developing others. By effectively developing the people around us, we elicit excellence in a number of impactful and far-reaching ways. Developing others is an important function of effective leadership.
A lot of people come to me and tell me they’re stuck. They are trying to figure out something or another, and they can’t seem to figure it out. Whether it’s getting more clients, making the right staffing decisions, making more money, finding time to exercise, etc, people often feel like they’re thinking themselves in circles.
Are you happy? What makes us happy? Can you cultivate happiness? These questions are difficult to answer, but psychologists like Martin Seligman from the University of Pennsylvania are trying a new approach to shed light on these questions.
CHILDHOOD STRESS There are many steps parents may take to reduce the stress children are experiencing in out culture. The following bullet-points represent areas of life that may be modified to increase the security and comfort in our childrens lives. * Provide a safe, secure, familiar, consistent, and dependable home. * Be selective in the television programs that young children watch (including news broadcasts) which can produce fears and anxiety. * Spend calm, relaxed time with your children. * Encourage your child to ask questions.r
Words can be wonderful things. Think of Shakespeare, Goethe, Whitman, the Beatles, Tori Amos, Lady Gaga, and YOU. Words help us express ourselves and communicate with each other. The words we use influence the way we think about ourselves and tell others a lot about us . The words we use most often and the mental pictures we create can also be damaging to us and negatively impact our ability to excel.
“You know what they say,” Pete said. “You’ve got to play the full 60 minutes if you want to win.” Steve began, “Let’s get started. Did everyone write some game plans for their highest priority goals?” Pete replied, “ We haven’t had time yet, Steve, but we’re going to do it this week.” Steve ...
Recently on LinkedIn I posed three questions that resulted in some very interesting conversations. Here they are: 1. An executive is only a leader if people choose to follow. How can you tell whether people are following or just doing their job? 2. Everyone says leadership is important, but why does it make a difference? 3. If an executive produces a good bottom line are they a good leader?
The calendar tends to be a baseline for me when I’m planning my Monday Morning Mini-Motivational Meetings (M5), so it seemed appropriate that this week’s theme somehow tackled the looming April 15th tax date.
