Have you ever walked into a place of work and felt heaviness in the atmosphere. Like fear was the predominant emotion permeating the work place. People only did what they were told, never showed initiative, avoided problems, and finger pointed to others as the source of problems. Gossip was ...

A while back I dated a guy for about two years, he was the best "gift giving" guy I've ever met in my life. We lived quite far from each other so there was a lot of traveling involved, but every time we got together he would always go out of his way to make me feel special. He'd plan activities I've never done before, always took me to new places and gave me the greatest gifts ever.
I get called to fix people problems and I'm really good at that. Most often the person I'm helping has a supervisor or executive team member who has huge gaps in their own management skills. For example here are some of the deficiencies I observe: • Personality differences • Stagnant ...

More companies than ever, both small and large, are considering ways in which they can introduce eLea ing in their bid to boost the skills of their employees. Many companies are opting for eLea ing because, when implemented correctly, it allows employees to learn in their own time. If they have access to a computer and an internet connection, they will be able to take part in online training. Of course, putting together a corporate training strategy is easier said than done. We do want to take you through the steps required.
Introduction If you’re anything at all like me, you’ve probably had periods in your life where the most fitting description would be that of being a “self-help junkie”. I know, it’s not a pretty or flattering description, and perhaps it’s not even obvious what I mean by it... Built right into our educational system is the debilitating idea that “in order to do something, you must first know how”. Sounds like common sense? It’s probably one of the most limiting ideas of our

One of my favorite quotes by Jesus is found in Matthew 17, versus 17 through 20. The story is about a man who brought his son to Jesus to be cured of an evil spirit. The man had told Jesus that the disciples were unable to cure him. Here is the King James version; Matthew 17.17 – Then Jesus ...
If you’re like me and I know many of you are out there, when it comes to customer service there are certain traits that stand out and can make or break a business. The three simple traits that I have noticed in businesses that deliver first-class service are the following: 1.They Listened to the Customer:
Inside the school hall in a typical Nigerian examination centre, young men and women are seated with rapt attention as they listen to a middle aged, well built man, clutching a folder containing some sheets of paper. He is surrounded by other ladies and gentlemen numbering about five who apparently are waiting for the middle aged well built man to give the go ahead to start the distribution of examination question papers and answer booklets.
What would your life look like if you had absolutely no fear? What kinds of things would you do if you lived from a frame of reference that your thoughts literally could form your world? How brightly would your light shine if you stepped out of the limitations that are keeping you small and stretched yourself well past your comfort zone into the place that you know, deep within, you are meant to be? Authentic leadership is all about being the person you know in your heart you have always been destined to be. Authentic leadership does not come from your title or from the size of your paycheck.
Have you have ever loaned money to a friend or family member when you really didn’t want to because you felt you had to? Then, here is some timely advice for you: Never feel that you must surrender when it comes to making a decision about whether or not to loan your money. There are ways for you to turn down a loan request in good conscience without agonizing over it, or hurting or antagonizing the feelings of the person who has made the request. Here are some suggestions: If you do not have the money, do not be embarrassed to say so.
Why doesn't this person do what I want them to do? Can't they just get along? Why is he so abrupt with everyone? Why doesn't she follow the steps in the process like they are meant to be followed? Why are so many mistakes made? Why do I have to follow up so much to make sure the work gets ...
Leadership maintains its effectiveness sometimes by natural succession according to established rules, and sometimes by the imposition of brute force. n The simplest way to measure the effectiveness of leadership involves evaluating the size of the following that the leader can muster. By this standard, Adolf Hitler became a very effective leader for a period — even if through delusional promises and coercive techniques. However, this approach may measure power rather t
Every successful group venture, whether in the business world, the family home, an educational setting or a community campaign, is the result of effective leadership. Simply put, leaders accomplish desired results by influencing others. The most significant contribution a leader can make is to change others through responsible stewardship. Many frustrated leaders fail to realize that they have a perfectly useful tool for stewardship and change in the art of good conversation.

I believe questions are the gateway to learning. I often use them during my training sessions to challenge audience members to think a bit more deeply about a point I’ve made. In my first book, Searching For Success, I posed lots of questions for my readers to ponder. One such group of questions in the book was developed as a way to help readers probe internally for insights regarding their current position in life. Based upon the answers developed, one could then take the necessary steps to fill the “life gaps” that existed.
The inspiring 2010 Oscar Best Film “The Kings Speech” was based on the true story of the Duke of Windsor struggling to overcome a speech impediment in order to fulfill responsibilities as a great leader. While preparing to assume the throne as King George VI he was faced with the challenge of making positive changes to his limited self-image, his internalized negative belief system, and an overall perception of his own potential greatness.
As leaders of living systems, the ability to reflect is one of the most important disciplines to develop. Over the years we have found that, at particularly difficult times in life, when confused and disheartened, and times of exhilaration when life is filled with joy and happiness, the jou aling practice helps center us and provides a space for reflection and learning. The Internet is filled with jou aling advice, and jou aling workshops abound.
"For what we've discovered, and rediscovered, is that leadership isn't the private reserve of a few charismatic men and women. It's a process ordinary people use when they're bringing forth the best from themselves and others. Liberate the leader in everyone, and extraordinary things happen."rnâ James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, The Leadership Challenge: How to Keep Getting Extraordinary Things Done in Organizations Leadership is a verb, not a noun. Leadership is action,

Few people understand the value of decisiveness. The ability to make quick decisions not only lends you an air of confidence, intelligence and authority, it can also make the difference between a positive and negative outcome in many situations. Some people believe that they are just ânaturally indecisivenessâ which is decidedly not true. Indecision, like every other behavior humans display, is simply a learned behavior. When you take the time to understand where it comes
QUESTION: I know I’m qualified to lead our team but I would be working for a boss who is consistently critical. The existing team leader has accepted another job, so the position is vacant. I’m not sure my skin is thick enough to report directly to a superior who meticulously scours every tiny detail, eager to discover any imperfection. Our boss’ style drains the team’s creativity, motivation and confidence because he also ignores all signs of progress. Our team could be at
Individual department or functional managers need to embrace ownership and responsibility for success and accomplishing defined strategic initiatives. However, to maximize the effectiveness of the organization, managers must be able to work with one another to achieve common goals. To be effective the following six principles apply: 1. Accountability must be at the forefront of every initiative.
One of the obstacles I face with my professional clients is their inability to recognize and overcome sabotaging self-talk. Through coaching them I realize how personal image can be, and how easy it is to be overly critical of ourselves –when we really need to be our own biggest fans.
Are your employees satisfied or engaged? As a business owner or manager, you had better know the difference between the two. Your employees may be satisfied at work because they are happily doing the bare minimum to keep you off their backs, but that’s not the same as being engaged. Engaged employees are the passionate ones who happily put in extra time when needed, are enthusiastic about the projects they are working on and are the most positive employees you could ever have!

Two of the most popular topics of workshops and business books are creativity and leadership. Both are popular because at some deep intuitive level most everyone knows they are both are worthwhile skills to have and to develop. However, while both are important and valued, they aren`t always talked about in tandem. Does creativity require leadership? Not necessarily. Does leadership require creativity? Only if you want to be truly successful. Why is that? Why do the best lead

How do you life a life without limits? Here are a couple keys to living life without limits: 1. You MUST trust God.
Trying to find a way to further your personal development in 2013? Why not take on a few of these leadership-based New Year's Resolutions? 1. Keep the Main Thing, the Main Thing! Wise words from a successful entrepreneur in one of our recent Young Presidents' Organization Forums. Trust is the fuel that propels teams and organizations to high-levels of success. Yet, organizational leaders today unknowingly do almost everything in their power to sabotage trust. The primary way in which trust in organizations is sabotaged is by a leader’s communication style. One particularly egregious style of leader communication, which significantly undermines trust, is called “indirect communication.” We have all fallen victim to indirect communication at one point in our professional or personal lives. For example, have you experienced…
Early in my consulting career I started telling people the consulting business is a relationship business. I was right, just a little short sighted. Actually all business is a relationship business. All work is a relationship business. All leadership is a relationship business. And while our focus in this article is on business or professional relationships, I believe you could say, at some level, life is a relationship business. Regardless of how you would say it, it is hard

Somewhere the other day I read that there are 7 secrets to success: Solo focus, undying conviction and imagination, crystal clear path, connection to the heart, extraordinary energy, skill set and stop at nothing. It seems to me that success cannot only come out of hard work but can also come through opportunity and determination. There are many success stories online, hundreds of people who have worked hard, have made smart decisions and have successfully managed to make the "million dollar mark".
I recently watched a football game between the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots. The final score—Colts 35, Patriots 34. This game, like all sporting events, contained many elements of leadership. Let’s review some I observed. Leaders organize before undertaking a task. Each team spent hundreds of hours preparing for the contest, seeking to leave nothing to chance. It’s called making a plan. The more detailed your organization of a task, the greater the potential for success. Plan your day, week, month, year—your life.
It's interesting to me that whenever I give a presentation to men in a corporate setting or work one-on-one with a male client I get a lot of questions about what kind of suit to wear for their body type and what the correct "button-rule" is for suits and jackets. As a professional image consultant I always advise my male clients to be sure to dress to accentuate their attributes and downplay any challenging areas. A lot of men have the impression that dressing for your body type only applies to women - but that's not true.

From time immemorial friends were vital to human survival. However, in this new millennium the importance of friendship and perceptions about what it takes to be a friend has moved into a state of decline. When our country was new, friendship was essential to life and protection. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "The only way to have a friend is to be one." However, two hundred years later it appears that emphasis on friendship has waned. Many people have no understanding of what constitutes a friend.

In a recent leadership workshop participants were asked to share all the things their peers, subordinates and bosses do that drive them crazy and make their jobs more difficult. Two full flip-chart pages were filled. Next, the same group of participants was asked to identify the things they wish they would do instead. There was dead silence for what seemed liked an ete ity. It seems to be human nature to focus on the things we don't want, especially the undesirable behaviors that we wish others would refrain from engaging in.r

A good leader provides purpose, direction and motivation to their followers. As a leader, you first must provide purpose. Purpose is a crystallized plan of action of what it is that you want to accomplish. The plan should include a method by which you obtain a goal, objective or outcome you are intending to accomplish. To increase the success of accomplishing your goal, objective or outcome, you should solicit feedback from your followers before implementing a plan of action.

As a professional image consultant one of the things that always amazes me is how many clothes professionals own that they never wear. Women tend to wear only 25 percent of their wardrobes, and men wear 85 percent of the clothes in their closets. That statistic indicates that women like to go shopping and buy items as an experience and an event, whereas men tend to only purchase what they need. But having all those extra clothes hanging in the closet only interferes with getting dressed in the morning.
We all have what Freud calls an Alter Ego. As a child mine was Superman. I would dive off my back porch with a towel around my neck landing on my belly with arms outstretched scraping my elbows until they bled. For the past twelve years or more my Alter Ego has been that of a Samurai Warrior which has given me the strength and courage to overcome the many obstacles I've faced and to be a better servant to others in need.

In today's challenging economy and the rise of a fickle and unstable workforce, leadership skills are more important than ever to combat the costs of high staff turnover. The new generation workforce have different values and expectations, and if their needs are not met, they walk. Many companies can't afford bonuses and extra perks to keep their trained workers and have to use other "enticements" to attract and keep their workforce, and they rely on strong, confident leaders to lead the way and achieve these miracles.

There is little doubt that I have a flair for unique names. My name, Saintmoses, is suggestive to that fact. While I was growing up I met a pretty lady who told me that her name was Kentra. I wasn’t as mesmerized by her beauty and coy essence as by her name. Even though Kentra’s face is lost today to my memory but the name still reverberates even in my subconscious. I know you must be wondering now why this is so. I will tell you presently.
God’s Word, is very outspoken conce ing the leaders of His people. This is the case in both the Old and New Testaments. God’s love for His humankind is such that He will not tolerate leaders that exploitation their subjects neither will He tolerate the abuse of power and authority. Someone reading this opening statement may want to refer the author to leaders that he or she is aware of that does exactly those things. However, we must remember that such abusive leaders will ultimately pay the price for their abuse.
So something’s been bugging you. You know that you need to make a change and you’re pretty sure there will be big consequences. So how do you go about it? Sit down and make a list of the payoffs you’re receiving physically, mentally, and emotionally for keeping things as they are. Then list the prices you’re paying for maintaining the status quo.
